I don't know if this has been posted before. If it has I apologize for the redundancy, but I thought it was important enough to post since the revelation over the past several days of the threats coming from Al Qaeda of an American Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and all the chatter of a pending nuclear attack against Iran.

The question is, how many of us are prepared for a large scale national disaster that would cripple food supplies, the power grid, emergency health services, transportation and the like.

..."It's a very real threat. ... Something that we have to worry about and defeat every single day." ...

Then tell your boss to close the borders, Dick.

Nobody believed they could pull off 911 untill they did. We wont fully commit to the war until after we lose an entire city.

Well, if a bomb is smuggled across the border, it will be a terrible indictment on administrations that did nothing to enforce our borders.

Oh boy . . . are they ramping up the justification for opening up another front in the GWOT?

I don’t mean to be alarmist, but I believe there is little anyone can do to prevent someone with money from buying a nuke and motoring (or sailing) it into a harbor in any coastal city in the world. I do not believe that more interations of the Patriot Act or more numerous and strict inspections of containers or more invasions of other countries would lessen the chances of this happening by any worthwhile degree. In this respect, I believe more money and power to Homeland Security would not help.
Frankly, I don’t know what would help other than being a country that people did not want to target. I don’t think this is possible, either, at least in the near term, and I don’t know what that would look like, anyway. I sure as hell don’t want the US to turn into a country no one gives a crap about, like Equador or something.

We need here in the US what Israel has, a group whos sole job is to find terrorists and kill them, no publicity, no trials, no problems.
If we suspect they are terrorists we take them out and that means not to dinner.
And if their was a civilian group banding together like a militia to do this “proactive” service I would join up in a heartbeat.

.....the threat of terrorists detonating a nuclear bomb in an American city: “It’s a very real threat. ... Something that we have to worry about and defeat every single day.”

Not only will this result in the deaths of many Americans, it will also be the demise of the democRAT party.

Cheney: Threat of nuclear attack in U.S. city ‘very real’

Yes and the open borders and open ports policy of the current administration will have allowed it to happen.

FWIW, Needlenose (lol, love your screenname!), Al Qaeda has been boasting of an American Hiroshima since at least 2005! http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=45203
http://english.aljazeera.net/English/archive/archive?ArchiveId=16505

Only recently have I heard the term “British Hiroshima” as well. There is no doubt in my mind that every word Cheney says about this is the truth - and God only knows how many Terrorist attacks the government has foiled.

We are not prepared for an attack in the slightest. Not prepared at all.

I suspect we’re really talking ‘dirty bomb’, not nuke.

We aren’t in the least prepared. Folks need to go back to having pantries and water supplies in their basements. Also extra medication on hand. We ARE in for a bumpy ride and sooner than we may think or hope.

Cheney's' just wolf calling to lay foundation for another multi-billion dollar 'stand by to stand by' contract with B&R.

Now if he were to say he's in disagreement with President Bush concerning the border policy, I would go to Defcon Four.

So everything is cool ;^)

Are you so caught up in national and international affairs that you STILL pay little attention to what goes on around you? Did you pay more attention to the bombing in Afghanistan and the War in Iraq than you do to your community’s emergency preparedness plan? Do you even know if your community HAS an emergency preparedness plan?

Why is it that Joe Normal doesn’t pay attention, take precautions, learn what to do, learn where to go, learn who to talk to?
I’m willing to bet that during WWII you could ask any school age child or adult where the nearest civil defense bomb shelter was and you could get an answer.

Why, in these perilous days, is comparable information not generally known, even by adults?

Would you know where to go if you received official information that your community had been attacked with a biochemical agent? How about a ‘dirty’ bomb?
Would you know who to contact if YOU received this information from an unofficial source that you trusted?

Is the everyday person so blasé about events unfolding that they make no effort to learn these things?
Is the government, national, state, or local, so blasé about this information that it does not try to make the information known throughout its’ sphere of influence?

What is to be done about making the changes in our lives so that we may live, prosper and grow the way the nation of the United States of America should, without giving up essential liberties?

If these ponderings and questions don’t make you pause and think then you may as well stop reading right now and go about your everyday life with your head remaining in the sand like the ostrich you are.

If these thoughts do make you think, what will you do about your thoughts?

Some suggestions
Find out about your community’s emergency preparedness plan.
If you don’t already know, find out where the nearest emergency shelter is located.
Lay in a separate supply of nonperishable food and water along with a good first aid kit.

Above all, do what the military taught me. Pay attention to detail!

These are things that I have done.
