Gravel is not a viable candidate. MSNBC isn't deciding, the Dems are. Do you actually believe that MSNBC decided who was going to stand on the dais last night? The DNC makes that decision.

I find your concern for Gravel to be curious. Yes, it is entertaining to listen to his disjointed,"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore" Howard Beale, ranting and raving, but he is not a serious candidate by anyone's measure. He just takes up air time. I would put Kucinich in the same category.

The Democrats have a long history of treating fringe candidates with zero chance of being nominated as if they were serious contenders--Jerry Brown, Carol Moseley Braun, Al Sharpton, Dennis Kucinich, etc.

Karl Marx has a line in his short book The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon to the effect that everything in history happens twice, the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce (which he claims to be taken from Hegel, but it isn't). The 'Rats are still reliving the glory years of the defeat in Vietnam and the hounding of Nixon from office, so they want to repeat that with Iraq and GWB.
