Opposite sides in immigration debate trade chants in Santa Ana; in Los Angeles, thousands take to streets.

A few dozen protesters on both sides of the immigration debate hollered slogans and slurs at each other this morning at the Civic Center while thousands of people in cities across the country took to the streets to demand rights for immigrants and a halt to workplace raids.

... In Santa Ana, about 30 anti-illegal immigration activists wearing red, white and blue met up with a dozen Orange High School students who skipped school to support legalization for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States ...

More immigrant rights marches are set to start at 2 p.m. in downtown Santa Ana today ...

The "Pro-America" rally – made up of people from different anti-illegal immigration organizations –– started at 10 a.m. at the corner of Civic Center Drive and Ross Street in downtown Santa Ana ..."I just wanted to let people know there is another side because all you're going to see on the news tonight is the pro-illegal immigration side," said Donna Piscopo, 45, of Huntington Beach ...

"Organizers of rallies across the country say immigrants feel a sense of urgency to keep immigration reform from getting pushed to the back burner by the 2008 presidential elections.

POLL

What should Congress do?

• Pass a bill that beefs up enforcement, allows the estimated 12 million illegal residents to pay fines and earn their way to citizenship

• Pass a bill that beefs up enforcement and deports illegal immigrants already here

• Not pass any new legislation but require the Department of Homeland Security to enforce current immigration laws

As far as “demanding rights” for “immigrants”, I wish the news media would clarify who is being affected. Legal immigrants who are in this country legally have certain rights under the law. Immigrants who have become citizens legally have all the rights of all citizens.

It’s not really an immigration debate as much as a discussion about what to do with people here illegally. We have laws on the books now regarding immigration, which obviously are not adequate.

if the illegals want to be legal, why not fill out the form and do it? We probably have the easiest migration laws in the world, why sneak in?

I’m not impressed with protestors who “skip school” to demand anything.

Gimme break - kids will skip school for any reason.

...and I demand the government provide me with my current standard of living (still working - wages, benefits, paid vacation, paid holidays, etc.) when I retire regardless of existing or non-existing laws and I don't care who pays for it neither?

I just want to better my life too!

I question their timing: Why do they want to tick off Americans every year right before Cinco de Mayo?

More importantly, May 1st is a Communist holiday.

So these illegals are linking themselves to Communism ? Are they trying to create a ‘workers paradise’ here a la Hugo Chavez’ new Venezuela that has stolen everything from the successful Venezuelans so he can give it away to the poor ?

That’s brilliant.

Illegals from Mexico have succeeded in turing whole sections of LA and Orange county into cesspools as bad as any Mexican border town. If they get their way and have unlimited immigration into California, there will be nobody left to pay taxes or employ them and the entire state will be a cesspool.

“I question their timing: Why do they want to tick off Americans every year right before Cinco de Mayo?”

My question: Is there some correlation to May 1st that I need to be aware of?

May 1st...

May 1st...

Oh yeah it’s May Day, or “Communism is fun and it works day”

Coincidence I’m sure, move along now, nothing to see here.

Don't let it get to you. We have to fight like hell and, at the same time, hold the politicians' feet to the fire--big time. I spent all morning phoning and faxing.
