French said to outpace Americans in French-bashing

The French dislike themselves even more than the Americans dislike them, according to an opinion poll published on Friday.

The survey of six nations, carried out for the International Herald Tribune daily and France 24 TV station, said 44 percent of French people thought badly of themselves against 38 percent of U.S. respondents who had a negative view of the French.

Only 14 percent of Germans, 25 percent of Italians, 29 percent of Spaniards and 33 percent of Britons had a negative view of the French, according to the Harris/Novatris poll, which questioned more than 1,000 people in each country.

Looked at from another perspective, the Germans have the highest regard for their neighbours, with 73 percent saying they had a positive view of the French.

By contrast, some 63 percent of Italians had a positive view of the French, 54 percent of Spaniards, 51 percent of French, 41 percent of Britons and just 35 percent of Americans.

Relations between France and the United States plunged following Paris's fierce opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

Thursday's poll said 74 percent of Americans said whoever wins the second round of France's presidential election on May 6 should try to improve relations with the United States.

Some 41 percent of French agreed, but 20 percent believed Paris should be even more distant with Washington.

More France implosion and liberal self-hate! It cracks me up though, to think we’re easier on the French than they are on themselves. Maybe they’ll wise up and change their ways!

Just kidding, that would never happen.

"...the Germans have the highest regard for their neighbours, with 73 percent saying they had a positive view of the French."

Of course the Germans have a favorable impression; the French have always welcomed their soldiers with open arms.

This isn’t surprising - after all, they have to live with themselves and we can be back on our side of the ocean and ignore them most of the time. It is sort of like what Churchill said once, when a female political opponent pilloried him about being drunk: “I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.”

As to Germans not disliking the Fwench, why should they? Every few decades they get a government-sponsored trip to France, and when they get there the Fwenchies greet them with lots of white banners, give them food, housing and women, and give them all of their rifles (never fired and only dropped once). What’s not to like?

LOL beer export to France treats the Germans well, too. When I was in Lyon I was amazed at how great the beer was. Then the locals informed me it was all from Germany so that made more sense.

French said to outpace Americans in French-bashing

Well, heck, if we had the short work-weeks that they have, and their long vacation periods, we'd have more time to bash them more.

We’ve got some catching-up to do.

"44 percent of French people thought badly of themselves"

Thought badly of "themselves", or badly of the French government?

I guess we beat the French-hating out of the Germans years ago.

France has been a 3rd rate power for nearly 100 years, when will their international status be lowered to the true level of their influence and power?

They have no business on the security council, never did.

“Only 14 percent of Germans”

How could the Germans POSSIBLY hate the French?

Anytime they want to kick butt, they can just cross the Rhine and beat up the French. But then other people like Americans, Brits and Russians come along and kick the Germans’ butts.

Seriously, I wish the France of Charlemagne would return. HE would know how to deal with the Muslims there.
He would laugh his silent laugh, grab his sword and....”

“Relations between France and the United States plunged following Paris’s fierce opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.”

They just don’t get it. It wasn’t their “opposition” it was going behind our backs and actively trying to scuttle the effort by all means possible.

Always watch your back around the french. They smile and give you a peck on both cheeks as they drive the stiletto in your lumbar.

Seriously, I wish the France of Charlemagne would return.

"France" has only existed since 1791. The modern French have about as much claim to Charlemagne as the Mexicans do to the Aztec and Mayan empires.

I was speaking figuratively. Charlemagne was a Frank - a German.
