CLIMATE: Unwilling to change
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | May 2, 2007 | Editorial

Europeans do a lot of finger-wagging at Americans over global warming. But when it comes to keeping their green houses in order, they have more than a few broken windows. Take the recent survey by the Energy Saving Trust in Great Britain, which found Brits and Yanks are nearly alike when it comes to saving the planet from runaway warming.

Eighty percent of Britons say they believe in the global-warming theory, but 40 percent are doing nothing to reduce their "carbon footprint." Another 39 percent say they are willing to do a few small things such as turning off the tap while brushing their teeth to conserve water and energy, but if winning the war on warming requires curbing vacation travel, walking to work when feasible, giving up their plasma TVs, paying higher energy taxes or trading carbon credits, then crank up the fans and pass the Coppertone.

How broad is the "green gap" between talking the talk and walking the walk on warming? About what it is on this side of The Pond: Just 4 percent say they have made major lifestyle changes they believe will combat warming.

These attitudes may seem surprising, coming from a nation that constantly scolds Americans about its greenhouse-gas "pollution." But it's not. Committing to the Kyoto Protocol was easy; meeting its target of a 30 percent reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions is an entirely different matter because it requires radical lifestyle changes. Given the choice of watching the World Cup on their 50-inch TV or returning to the Stone Age, the British will pick the former every time. It's called human nature. But it also shows the British, while telling pollsters they believe catastrophic warming is coming, really aren't buying the claptrap.

My sister-in-law worked in South West England for a couple of years and was suprised at the lack of environmental ‘awareness’ by the Brits.

What difference does it make? Humans are not the culprits in “global warming” it’s the sun and the oceans. Ask any scientist that’s not trolling for a “climate change” grant, and they’ll tell you.

Which means they lie to pollsters.

One wonders why?

But what about the scientific evidence of human generated carbon dioxide?

Does anyone stop to realize that we all emit carbon dioxide every time we exhale?

Should we hold our breath?

It is amazing how many fools are taken in..it is all about the money trail. A grand scam being played by the liberals, who are so ineffective, they MUST scam and steal to obtain anything...whether it is money or power. The only two things that matter on the face of this earth for them.

If humans are to blame, we better quit breeding more humans. The States have over 300 million people and it will grow by leaps and bounds now as those people keep breeding. Then we have the 20 million plus illegals. As our population grows so will the use of everything we use. Including gas......no choice here. They say we don’t care....BS....people are trying to save on gas....there’s just too many people. I’ve heard that it takes about 12 acres of land to support us here. We only have about 9 acres available. That’s why we import so much stuff. All we gotta do is quit messin around and having babies.

“But it also shows the British, while telling pollsters they believe catastrophic warming is coming, really aren’t buying the claptrap.”

Well, either they’re lying to pollsters, or this is a rather sad commentary on human nature. Because if I really believed that “catastrophic” warming was coming, and I really believed we could do something about it, I would be willing to make all sorts of sacrifices.

Of course, I don’t believe human-caused catastrophic warming is coming, and even if the climate alarmists are right, there’s probably little we can do to prevent it, anyway.

You, my dear RC2, need to read Mark Steyn's book "America Alone".

America as we know it won't exist in 100 years if we reduce birth rates.

It’s just a fad. Folks want to be trendy: wear slogans on shirts, be seen eating and drinking the right thing and driving the correct car. Ask them to do something totally trashy like ride the bus or drive a little 4-banger and you can just kiss their....

It is human nature to answer a question about some newsworthy abstraction in the socially desirable direction. However, having expressed an opinion without having made some public commitment to act in a concrete way, typically leads to no change in behavior.

It is thoroughly to be expected that almost everyone will say "oh yes, I worry about global warming, the environment is important to me" and then go on about their business as if neither the environment, nor their expressed "opinion," even exists.
