Maybe the couple are white and restorative justice was applied in the decision. Under restorative justice, whites would not be granted the benefit of the doubt that they were just too dumb to know better.

Dumb would have been they gave the kid something that was poison or very risky without knowing it (like honey). Watching a baby waste away for six weeks would require them being to dumb to breed (as in they would not figure it out).
