Why can’t all the equipment needed to produce ethanol run on ethanol?

Assuming, for sake of dicussion, that the numbers given in the cartoon are correct (I don't think they are), eventually we would run out of ethonal, because it takes moreenergy to produce ethonal that you get out of the process.

Those numbers are probably correct. We’ve known for a long time that it takes more energy to produce ethanol than you get from the finished product.

Facts don’t bother people who have a “religion”, and ethanol is part of the global warming “religion”.

The really laughable thing is, [I’ll bet] it is probably more environmentally friendly simply drill & pump oil than process ethanol. It’s certainly cheaper and more efficient.

And the ethanol worshipers still haven’t figured out that gasoline is a small piece of the oil pie. We could eliminate the need for gasoline tomorrow and it would not dramatically change the amount of crude oil required to supply our other petroleum related needs.
