What Is It With Jews And Guns? (Burt Prelutsky: Jews Should Be Spending Time On The Gun Range Alert)

The other day, a friend of mine asked me why I thought those on the left hate guns so much. My initial reaction was to acknowledge that I have a tough time getting a handle on anything liberals say or think or do. It all seems wacky to me.

What’s more, I have no idea who compiles their playbook, although we are quite aware that they have one. It’s where they get all their talking points. For instance, we know that liberals favor affirmative action, although at the same time we also know they like to say that where race is concerned, they’re the ones who are colorblind. They also endorse bilingual education for Latinos even though it’s a handicap that the youngsters have a tough time overcoming, and may explain why such a depressingly small percent of them hang around high school long enough to graduate.

We know that leftists oppose capital punishment although I, for one, have never heard a compelling argument why a person who takes one or more lives in cold blood should be spared the ultimate punishment.

Furthermore, liberals seem to believe that same-sex marriages, abortions on demand, separation of church and state, not to mention open borders, are all covered somewhere in the U.S. Constitution. But if we’re going to be honest, one can see why liberals, who are far more prone than conservatives to forsake logic for emotion, would feel as they do about some of these issues.

As I say, I don’t know who makes their decisions. But it hardly matters if it’s a committee consisting of Bill Clinton, James Carville, Howard Dean, Chris Matthews, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Jimmy Carter, Charles Rangel, Barbara Boxer, Keith Olbermann, Michael Moore and Bozo the Clown, who set the agenda or it’s simply the editorial board of the New York Times. The thing is, they’re in perfect agreement that if only they got to make and enforce all the rules, this would be a far better world.

But why are those on the left so vehemently opposed to decent, law-abiding citizens owning guns? After all, most people -- unlike Hollywood celebrities -- can not afford to surround themselves with armed bodyguards. And as dedicated as the police may be to protect and serve, they’re usually not around at the very moment your life is being threatened. Besides, if liberals had their way and the Second Amendment was repealed, the only people in America with guns would be cops, criminals and the military. Interestingly, of those particular groups, criminals are the ones liberals hate the least.

Frankly, having given it some thought, I believe the reason that the Left hates guns so much is because of us Jews. With very few exceptions, we are terribly squeamish around firearms. The fear is totally irrational. It’s not just that we think someone will shoot us with our own gats, but that the guns, themselves, are anti-Semites, and will kill us of their own accord.

Sadly, it’s more than that. They also fear those Americans whom they most closely associate with gun ownership; namely, southern Christians.

Even though America is the most tolerant nation on earth, Jews tend to think if terrible things happened to their ancestors in 15th century Spain and 19th century Russia and 20th century Nazi Germany, it can and will happen here. It’s a form of paranoia. But it’s a very strange form. For as we all know, this is a nation of 300 million. So, wouldn’t you think a minority numbering a mere five million, and in constant fear of pogroms, would spend as much time as possible on the firing range?

Jews' opposition to guns is irrational. I can't think of a singular group of people who ought to spend more time on the gun range - practicing. "Lock and load" could save Jewish lives. When you think of defenseless Jews slaughtered for centuries without provocation, a gun is the most effective answer there is to persecution and senselss death. Israelis appreciate the importance of being armed. It would behoove their American cousins to adopt the same outlook - it would immeasurably enhance Jewish survival.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus

I never saw any stats/polls on Jews and firearms. I’m not so sure we are in fact anti-gun so much as the majority of Jews being liberals simply buy the whole liberal package.

I know in my case when my dad, after much pleading, bought me a .22 when I was in my mid-teens, which was a long time ago, none of the extended family seemed to think much about it other than it was unusual.

It is liberal derangement syndrome. They FEEL, they do’t think. It is the same with taxes. They want to raise them. They say it is to pay the bills but they know it will reduce revenues.

Yeah, Burt—the ones you knew in Hollywood! I know Rabbis who can drive nails with firearms, but they’re not from the left coast.

Funny thing about all of these examples of Jews being killed with firearms, every one of them the majority of the killing was done by the governments not the common people.

These guys certainly don't fall into the anti-gun Jew category.

Why not ask a Rabbi? I know liberals who are pro-gun, they just shut up at the range about politics.

I, for one, have never heard a compelling argument why a person who takes one or more lives in cold blood should be spared the ultimate punishment.

I can answer that one. There is nothing wrong with the death penalty for people who have been justly convicted. The issue is that many people have been unjustly convicted and sentenced to die BECAUSE OF PROSECUTORS' POLITICAL AMBITIONS, AND GUILT OR INNOCENCE BE DAMNED (yes, I'm shouting - this one ought to infuriate all of us).

In the abstract, the death penalty is a good idea, just like helping the poor is a good idea. It's that, just like helping the poor, it's become a government program gone wrong. Time to terminate it, or provide for a better review system so that us peasants don't get ground under the heel of an ambitious prosecutor.

When I lived in Northern Virgina, my Jewish neighbor was and still is the most well armed individual I have ever met. Once when I attended his Labor Day party, he invited me and another neighbor to check out his arsenal. Half of his basement was dedicated to firearms and ammo. He has three rifle size gun safes and another safe that was just as large for his handguns. After opening one of the safes, he pulled out an assault rifle with scope and handed it to me. It was an M-14, the first and only one I have ever held in my hands. Time stood still for a moment as I held it standing there listening to him talk as he pulled two more AR-15’s, and many more rifles and shot guns. He is a very active member of the Issac Walton Conservation League, and an Army veteran of the early 60’s. An exact opposite of what this article portrays Jewish people of being.

If you want to own your very own near M-14, check out Springfield Armory and get on of their M-1A's. I shot expert with an M-14 in Officers' Basic at Fort Lee, VA in 1968 and bought an M-1A for myself in 1986. The only difference between the M-1A and the M-14 is that the M1-A can't be adapted to fire on full automatic, while the M-14 can, even though most M-14s that were issued to the troops were set up only to fire on semi-auto. Right now the M-14, primarily in semi-auto mode, is used by many of our snipers in Iraq.

Thanks, Ill look into that. If I remember right, my neighbor told me that his M-14 was his Army issue and he was able to buy it once it had been modified back when he was discharged from the service. Although I have never fired an M-1A(M-14) or an AK-47, my choice would have to be the M-1A if I were to buy one. Of course a fully auto BAR would be nice to have just for S*its & Giggles.

What a truly great observation.

Can you document this libel?

You know what they say about opinions.

My father enlisted in the Marines in early 1942. I have a picture of him at Camp Lejeune or Paris Island posing with a BAR during his training.
