The IDF hold intensive training maneuvers in preparation for a feared Syrian attack on the Golan Heights. Hundred of tanks and thousands of soldiers, backed by helicopters and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, massed in the Judean Desert to drill simulations of war. The training exercise focused on Brigade 401 and its utilization of Israel's most advanced tank - the Merkava Mark 4 - against the Syrian advanced Russian-made T-72. The tanks were backed up by artillery fire and supported by infantry troops, some traveling in armored personnel carriers and others being flown into the field by transport helicopters...

Many of the Syrian tanks would be decimated by the Israeli air force.

One wonders if Olmert learned a lesson on fighting wars the last time around, or is Israel heading for another disasterous military defeat?

Syria isn’t stupid enough to attack the Israeli’s. Won’t happen.

Disastrous military defeat after months of shuffling around. Olmert’s preparations at the moment are drafting warnings in varying levels of bombast of “dire consequences”, planning both bombing raids on critical Syrian infrastructure and the institution of “emergency, humanitarian” sources to immediately replace that very same infrastructure, and writing up rules of engagement that hamstring the IDF to a stalemate.

It does seem odd to think that they might do that. I mean... SYRIA...BY THEMSELVES?

Destroying 10% of a tank probably puts it out of service.

I'm old enough to remember that very few thought Syria would attack in the 70s. They had been manhandled so badly before. They seem to think that if there is a big enough distraction, ie another big flare up in Lebanon, they can grab and hold the Golan and make it too expensive for Israel's leadership to fight to take it back. It is sort of how the Japanese thought in World War II.

From what I understand the Israelie PM has to get permission for the Kenessett to do anything. Which is the kind of ham stringing the Dems would love to invoke on the Presidency in this country. Looks like a blueprint for diasaster when the military does not control the battle field.

I see this playing out this summer as first Hamas launches a massive missle attack. As The IDF responds than Hezzbollah chimes in, then Syria. Syria will hunker down and wait for Isreal to come to them, planning on reprising Olmert's dithering from last July.

This scenario will either have Isreal on the defensive fighting 3 fronts, or the politicians get out of the IDF's way and Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank/Gaza get creamed. Scenario 2 will be were Iran comes in. If Iran comes in we will cream them but lose the Middle East oil for quite a while.
