May 4 2007--A large tornado caused extensive damage in Greensburg, Kansas this evening. The storm hit the Western Kansas town shortly before 10:00 p.m.
KAKE storm chaser Lanny Dean was just a few miles away when the tornado hit. Dean has seen several homes destroyed on the southern edge of the community.
KAKE's Nick VinZant is reporting sigificant damage in Greensburg with houses destroyed and others seriously damaged.

"I am posting a request from Darin Brunin.
I just hung up the phone with him. He is in Greensburg and reporting huge damage. His words were that the damage path could be up to 2 miles wide. He and Dick McGowan are in the process of rescuing people from their homes. They have said that there are not enough emergency personnel to help out all the victims. Their request is that if anyone is near the town to please stop and help the people. They are reporting dazed and confused people just roaming around. I could hear it in his voice that this is a terrible situation in Greensburg. Those people need help."
Supercell at one point was over 14 miles high on radar - continuing Northeast, still producing mile-wide tornadoes.
Oh, Jesus, watch over the people in Greensburg as they deal with this terrible situation!!! Praying that there aren’t any fatalities!! :*(
Oh, my God!! :*( :*(
More prayers going up for all who were in the path of that monster!! :*( :*( Do we have any FReepers in that area??
Not the same tornado but it’s still going on - about to hit St. John, KS.
It’s a pretty rural area. Greensburg has about 1,600 people, St. John is a bit above 1,000. Possibly just hit Macksville which is about 500.
Gracious. I really hate tornado season! :*(
Prayers for everyone in the way of *any* tornados!!

Just heard that 60% of downtown is severely damaged. Reports of people calling in OK. No deaths reported yet.
go back a few pages for the greensburg stuff most impressive tornadic supercell many have ever recalled..including me(20 years of storm chasing/following)
Looks like Ellinwood (larger town than Greensburg) may have just taken a direct hit.
Possible Tornado entering Great Bend (much larger city) at the moment as well.
