GIULIANI URGES CLINTON TO RELEASE ISRAELI SPY (1999, Jonathan Pollard)
Times Union | Sep 29, 1999 | Stewart M. Powell

Posted on 05/06/2007 11:57:38 AM PDT by calcowgirl

WASHINGTON -- New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani urged President Clinton Tuesday to free convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, a move that could boost Jewish support for the Republican's prospective Senate campaign -- and complicate a possible run in 2000 by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

...

Regarding Pollard, Giuliani said the Israeli deserves presidential clemency because the life sentence for espionage given him in 1987 goes "way beyond" sentences given in the past to American citizens convicted of spying for a U.S. ally.

Pollard, a former civilian U.S. Navy intelligence analyst, has already served a longer prison term than enemy spies who are routinely traded by their governments, according to Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor and associate attorney general in the Justice Department.

"It seems to me that there was an appropriate basis on which the President could exercise his discretion and cut that particular sentence," Giuliani said, adding that Pollard has "served much more than anyone else convicted of the same thing."

Giuliani stressed that he was restating a position that he had taken on the Pollard case "a couple of years ago" rather than announcing a new position.

The Clinton administration continues to review clemency for Pollard following repeated requests by the Israeli government. ...

...

Giuliani deflected questions about whether he would endorse Texas Gov. George W. Bush as the Republican presidential nominee. The Associated Press quoted a top New York GOP official as saying the mayor could make such an announcement on Thursday.

Hmmm... one less reason to put up with idiots still trying to pass Rudy off as “conservative”.

Remember: All of those idiots who claim that the Rutard is "tough" because he dissed Arafat. Its NOT THAT DIFFICULT, indeed it is ADVISABLE to do so in the largest Jewish city in the world after Tel Aviv, especially when said community gave you your margin of victory over Dinkins.

That being said, I'm happy that he told Arafat to shove it. But to pretend that he was "brave" to do so in NEW YORK CITY is misleading.

All of us folks out here who already know today that we will never vote Democrat, have to be realistic in our expectations in 08.Rudy did prosecute John Gotti, which in New York takes tremendous courage not to mention 9/11,when he was so close to danger on behalf of the citizens of his city.America can do much worse then Rudy(gore, obama, hitlery)I`ll settle for someone who is for Victory with no conditions in the only issue that really matters. What is wrong with support for an ally?Could anti-semitism be a basis for this attack?

Prosecuting a mob boss when you’ve got the Bull and others flipping for the gov’t isn’t the least bit impressive to me. That’s not courage. As far as 9/11 goes, the people that would be the absolute best guage of Rudy’s courage and leadership or lack thereof would be the fireman of NYC. They have not spoken well at all of Rudy.

Dealing with your mindset takes courage. You dance very closely to insult. If you believe Rudy Giuliani is an “ally”, then you are on the wrong side of the battlefield. If you’re inferring that either myself, or the poster of the article is trying a anti-semitic tactic, then you’ve got problems far worse than I can help you with.

LOL. What did Rudy’s ancestors know and when did they know it?

Sounds like the Bush Nazi gold story, only worse.

I’m calling B.S. You’re (tsowellfan) trying to make a snide comment. I say you’re a Rudy supporting troll, probably a retread that didn’t survive the purge.

Seriously, no one could be that stupid.

Who will you vote for if he is the nominee? You seem to have evaded that question, and were the firemens complaints mainly pre 9/11 union issues, not the fact that he was within hundrds of feet of the burning towers trying to lead in a situation most folks(mayor nagin) would stay far away from.I don`t believe you know much about city life,or the Mob in particular, who have an ability to threaten to kill everyone you know and love. The ally in question is Israel, why would a country who is fighting this same mortal enemy want to kill U.S.military,I think you maybe the one with the greater problems intellectualy.Good luck in your mindless endeavor of voting for a candidate who will either lose in the primary or cannot defeat the first enemy we must destroy the dems!

Let's put it this way. I would only support Rudy (and it would be with my nose plugged) if he became the republican candidate against Hillary. There is only one man worse than Rudy and that's MCain. I would like to see Tancredo or Hunter become the next President but I doubt they would win the general election. I would, however, do my best to support them in everyway in the general election. So, Im sitting back and waiting for Fred Thompson.

That being said, I dont really care if you think Im a Rudy troll or not. Im not in FR to satisfy you and whoever it is that you support. I only hope that you are against Rudy because you are a Mcain supporter simply because I cannot stand the thought that someone like you would be on the same team as I.

It seems like you could have used the space to convince us to stand behind whoever it is that you support instead of attacking fellow Freepers and angering them to a point of NOT voting for your guy if he did win the primary. Seems counter productive, if you ask me.

In other words: Lighten up

“Who will you vote for if he is the nominee?”

What will you do if Godzilla comes over the hill and after you tomorrow? I’m not playing the what if game with you.

“You seem to have evaded that question.”

Funny that you mention that. It hasn’t been intentional, you’re just the first person to ask me since I’ve been on the forum. Good for you, I guess.

“I don`t believe you know much about city life,or the Mob in particular, who have an ability to threaten to kill everyone you know and love.”

Ok. I’m not going to try and influence your beliefs.

“The ally in question is Israel, why would a country who is fighting this same mortal enemy want to kill U.S.military,I think you maybe the one with the greater problems intellectualy.”

And your best defense for a spook that got snagged is to question an anti-semetic conspiracy. With all due respect, give me a break. Tag me with a 25 IQ, so you can lower your expectations of my intellect. It’ll be easier for both of us next time.

“Good luck in your mindless endeavor of voting for a candidate who will either lose in the primary or cannot defeat the first enemy we must destroy the dems!”

No comment needed. Good luck to you.

I’ve been trying to connect Rudy with Mauro Giuliani who 1819 left Vienna, mainly for financial reasons: his property and bank accounts were confiscated to pay his debtors...Anybody got more info on this stuff?

Who gives a flying duck?

Did you embrace such nonsense when Garry Trudeau and black chopper types were dragging up tales from the last two centuries about the Bush clan and Skull & Bones?

When it comes to reasons why someone will or will not vote for Rudy, it shouldn't be based on ancient family history that doesn't have Shinola to do with today. If it does, you're more stupid than people who are simply ignorant.
