Could Fred Thompson Please The Right?
2007 The Christian Science Monitor ^ | 5/7/07 1:00 PM CST | Ariel Sabar

Posted on 05/07/2007 12:04:22 PM PDT by DBCJR

...Members of the Lincoln Club of Orange County, an influential conservative group that hosted the event, praised Thompson's plain-spoken style, his appeal to Southern voters, and his impeccable ideological credentials on issues like limited government, lower taxes and border security...The prospect of a Thompson candidacy has electrified former colleagues on Capitol Hill. Some 50 House Republicans trooped over to a social club across from the Capitol last month to goad him to run.

Political strategists say his appeal has as much to do with conservative displeasure with the current Republican field..."He is every bit as skilled in front of a camera as Ronald Reagan, and we've seen what an enormous political asset that can be," says GOP pollster and strategist Whit Ayres...Speaking of the "liberals in Washington," he said, "Of course, they're talking about once again targeting the rich. My advice for anybody in the middle class: Don't stand anywhere near the target."

He's no gipper, but he is better than what we have.

I was listening to Reagan's Goldwater speech on Friday afternoon before Fred came on. Maybe people who know about this kind of thing better than I do can let me know if I'm right, but it seemed like Fred modeled his speech after the same overall message and individual themes as the Goldwater speech. I was very impressed with the content.

That being said, the presentation was lacking in energy.

I hate when a lie reported by MSNBC is taken as gospel. The number was 63 GRRRRR.

i’ve studied on the subject, and my conclusion is now clear

fred is formidable

he is a man of strength, character, consistency, and with his own internal locus of control

this is no northeastern republican in name only

unlike president bush unfortunately, who is also good person, thompson has a thoroughly-integrated theme and vision of america that deeply reinforces our identity as a nation

the only bi-partisanship fred will care to achieve is through his very nature - he is hard not to like as a person despite differing views

fred is articulate, confident but not cocky, intelligent but guided by experienced common sense

no other candidate on either side has such an appreciation of the fundamental issues that will affect america in the years to come

like jesus in the garden of gethsemane, thompson is taking the time now to savor the last moments of a private quiet life of comfort - sacrifice awaits

a towering man (6’6”) that only seems amplified by soaring ideals

remember this moment - world history in the making

Apparently there was a very long program before his speech. I think everyone was tired by then.

That's good to know. I spoke with my dad about the speech afterwards and he loves Fred but he said Fred looked like he had arrived on the redeye just before the speech.

Fred Thompson did some really excellent work. Take a look at this link jellybean posted:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1807439/posts?page=66#66

>>>jellybean’s link to Fred Thompson’s thoughts on campaign finance reform and the Asia fundraising scandal.<<<

That needs to be plastered everywhere!

But, Thompson went to the MSM. Hollywood is basically run by dems and libs. Hollywood is the MSM.

That part bothers me.

He may not be the “gipper” but I think he will eventually get a great nickname based on his own characteristics. I sure did enjoy his common sense speech. The rest of the candidates seem to be pandering to one cause or another but they are declared candidates and Fred isn’t yet. I look forward to supporting him.

The MSM will do him NO favors as soon as he announces he is running. They will, and probably are already, digging for dirt on him.

He is doing jobs. He hasn’t compromised his beliefs to do that job. He plays a fairly conservative guy on L and O, from all accounts, and is reported to have veto power over his dialogue.

He is using ABCradio to disseminate the conservative message and getting paid for it. He doesn’t live in Hollywood, he lives in VA. Are all conservatives in radio viewed with the same suspicion by you?

I just never heard of him before FR. I paid no attention to him until Jellybean posted that link.

I want that link in every newspaper.

I am just worried that he may have ended up in MSM land because of that information.

“The MSM will do him NO favors as soon as he announces he is running. They will, and probably are already, digging for dirt on him.”

Truly, thou art a prophetess! The LA Times is already at work:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/realclearpolitics/20070504/cm_rcp/la_times_fred_thompsons_racist
Los Angeles Times article by Tina Daunt, “Will Fred Thompson’s racist role have political repercussions?”

Writes Daunt: “Thompson played a white supremacist, spewing anti-Semitic comments and fondling an autographed copy of ‘Mein Kampf’ on a television drama 19 years ago.”

That this kind of journalistic schlock gets by Times editors is indeed embarrassing, but one must admit that Daunt has a small point: If Thompson gets in the race, some nitwit out there is going to splice together scenes of Thompson is his supremacist movie, upload it to YouTube, and watch as the views tick away. In short order, the video will make it to the mainstream where we’ll find Meredith Vieira on the Today Show doing a segment on it, all the while reassuring her audience that Fred Thompson isn’t a racist, he just plays one on TV.

>>>He plays a fairly conservative guy on L and O, from all accounts

Now that statement right there I have a problem with. You do realize that is TV? I can play a squirrel on TV, that doesn’t mean I’m a squirrel.

>>>Are all conservatives in radio viewed with the same suspicion by you?

Yes and no. There are radio personalities that learn towards advertizing dollars.
