Exactly! A republican who plays a racist on television is a bad guy, but a racist who is a high-ranking democrat official—that’s just honky dory. I know—let’s name a few hundred buildings in West Virginia after the guy.
Byrd is really a racist although I doubt he has felt any real animosity toward black people for many years. I don’t know about Lott, but while I have a very low opinion of Lott, no fair person could possibily condemn him for a careless remark and ignore Byrd’s constant slips. But the lust for power sweeps away any chance of fairness. Lott should never have been knocked out of his leadership role for what he did and for Bush to have collaborated in this act was unseemly. Now he is reaping the benefit. Lott is not going to do one thing to help Bush.
