"And He said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?' And they said, 'No, nothing.' And He said to them, 'But, now, let him who has a purse take it along, likewise also a bag, and let him who has no sword sell his robe and buy one. For I tell you, that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE, WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.'" And they said, 'Lord, look, here are two swords.' And he replied to them, 'Enough!'" (Luke 35-38)
Were two swords really "enough"? Each should have followed His instruction and procured his own sword, not substiute an inadequate show of "arms". These two swords were not "sufficient." He cut them off with a different word, a rebuke "Enough! [You don't get it.]" And why did he want them armed? Because His followers were going to suffer persecution and they would be considered "transgressors." Transgressors of what? According to the Jews transgressors of the Law and as such they were hunted down, imprisoned, crucified, and/or stoned to death.
In this most recent act of violence against Christians these three men were considered transgressors [of the law of Allah] and had to pay with their lives in a gruesome torture and slaying. Where were their "swords"? Insults should be met by turning the other cheek. However, deadly assault should be met with countervailing force. We should defend innocent life, even if it is our own, by stopping those who would take it.
If you don't own a "sword", sell something, even if you think it is important (Xbox, automobile, house), and buy one or its modern equivalent, a sidearm, and learn how to use it. It is, after all, a command of Christ. We don't live "by the sword", but we should live "with one."
Yeah and Amen to that.
"Evil prospers when good men do nothing."
Bleating like a sheep in the face of evil is doing nothing.
My God, and his Son, My Lord Jesus Christ are my Shepherd, but they do not intend me to be slaughtered by other men like a sheep.
