Manhattan, which once epitomized the glamorous and largely childless locale for Sex and the City, has begun to look more like the set for a decidedly upscale and even more vanilla version of 1960s suburbia in The Wonder Years.
Since 2000, according to census figures released last year, the number of children under age 5 living in Manhattan mushroomed by more than 32 percent. And though their ranks have been growing for several years, a new analysis for The New York Times makes clear for the first time who has been driving that growth: wealthy white families.
At least half of growth was generated by children who are white and non-Hispanic. Their ranks expanded by more than 40 percent from 2000 to 2005. For the first time since at least the 1960s, white children now outnumber either black or Hispanic youngsters in that age group in Manhattan.
The analysis shows that Manhattans 35,000 or so white non-Hispanic toddlers are being raised by parents whose median income was $284,208 a year in 2005, which means they are growing up in wealthier households than similar youngsters in any other large county in the country.
Among white families with toddlers, San Francisco ranked second, with a median income of $150,763, followed by Somerset, N.J. ($136,807); San Jose, Calif. ($134,668); Fairfield, Conn. ($132,427); and Westchester ($122,240).
In comparison, the median income of other Manhattan households with toddlers was $66,213 for Asians, $31,171 for blacks and $25,467 for Hispanic families.
What those findings imply, demographers say, is not only that the socioeconomic gap between Manhattan and the other boroughs is widening, but also that the population of Manhattan, in some ways, is beginning to look more like the suburbs or what they used to look like than like the rest of the city.

White people are evil?
As Mark Steyn might say: “It’s the demography, stupid!”.
Maybe all those people who have stopped reading the NYT have answered the clue phone...
The surge is working! Oh, wrong surge.
Those are some uuuggggllly hats!
Duh, the poor little kids of all colors were there all the time.
And I grew up as a white kid in Manhattan.
It is about time. You can’t improve the lot of the underclass by restricting the population of the upperclass. I think well off conservatives especially should make sure they have more than the national average where children are concerned. (It is already largely the case but we could do better.) I have 4 kids and we home school and I think we are going to have one more. I am committed to doing my part to make sure this country isn’t transformed into a third world nation.
Good job. Keep it up. The Mormons and the Amish are doing the same as well.
I will. A buddy of mine has 7 kids, two sets of twin girls and 1 set of twin boys and one additional boy. I was talking to him and he shared how he’d gotten tired of people saying “Don’t you know how to fix that” referring to his wife getting pregnant. I do think it is unfortunate that it has become such a joke. If anyone should be reproducing it should be those who have the means to do so.
You brought a good point. I didn't think about it.
One of the lasting effects of September 11th attacks is that it taught us, especially yuppies in New York City the value of life.
As long as the family has the means, they should have as many kids as possibly they can handle.
After all, the Bible instructs us to be "fruitful and multiply".
These class warfare people are utterly ridiculous.
OMG, successful people choose to live in the greatest city in the world and actually reproduce there! Even worse, their white kids might spawn some offspring there, as well!! They may even attend private schools not open to “whatever is the most current PC term for illegals” these days, and not offer it to them for free. Certainly terms for a lawsuit.
Correct answer:
Still not getting any, huh?
A MEDIAN income of $284,000? What the hell do these people do for a living to be so well paid?
doctors, lawyers, wall st.
