India Tells US not to Interfere in Iran Pipeline Deal

New Delhi, May 9: India has told the United States to keep its hands off the issue of Iran gas pipeline and declared that it will take a decision in the matter in accordance with its energy needs and national interest.

This assurance was given in Parliament on Tuesday by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora.

He said India would not be cowed down by the threat of the US or any other country in pursuing its energy policy.

Deora said the US Energy Secretary was recently in India and the Government told him that it was none of America's business to advise what India should do on the pipeline issue.

The Minister's response came while replying to a supplementary by Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) who referred to a letter by a US Senator in which he was reported to have cautioned India against going ahead with the plan to construct a gas pipeline up to Iran.

She said the matter was very disturbing and the US attitude amounted to interference in the sovereign affairs of the country.

She demanded that the House wanted an assurance from the House that it would not bow to foreign pressure.

Too late for that now. Indian has stopped accepting governmental aid since 2000 if I recall correctly.

You are quoting some antiquated articles. But to set the record straight, during the Kennedy administration the relations with India were good and JFK used India to spy on China. So foreign aid should be seen in that context. I dont think you would know that. So learn something first before you call people ingrates.

Nixon screwed up the relationship when he supported Pakistan and the Bangladesh genocide. India is not to be blamed for the sour relationship.
Besides, I dont think India has recieved high levels of aid in recent history.

Gee, Paul Olkhovsky doesn’t sound like a Pakistani name, but then you call anyone who disagrees with you a Pakistani anyway.

The Iran gas issue is not so simple for any Indian government. Both the communists which support the government & the centre-right hindu nationalist BJP,are calling for India to reject US demands to shelve the pipeline. So the domestic compulsions are very overwhelming. The economic ones are no less simple-India needs cheap energy & the nuclear deal will take almost a decade to reap fruit on the ground, unlike what some airheads over here rant. The other gas options for India are Qatar, Burma,Bangladesh & Indonesia-all more or less as stable/unstable as Iran is.

You dont have to be a “Pakistani” to be a “Paki”. Take yourself for example.

In a decade of paying tribute to the Pakistani army to “guard” your gas pipeline, you will have paid them over 6 billion dollars.

Why do you rant about it, when you want to give them even more than we do?

I'm against all foreign aid.

If you are against all foreign aid,why don’t you post articles about US military aid to Egypt or Pakistan?Or armssales to the same?

I am against welfare handouts to foreign countries, not military aid or arms sales. Military aid is strategic and arms sales aren’t foreign aid. Russian arms sales to America’s enemies concern me alot more than American arms sales. I am not here to tear down my own country. Bashing America is a job for you foreigners, not for me. I post about all kinds of things. Here are some of my posts about Egypt:

Why don’t you post about India’s arms sales to Burma? How come you don’t post articles about the communist threat to India, or the fact that the Indian communist party who support this pipeline also happen to be servants of Pakistani interests?

Because unlike you,my head is not filled with paranoia about the commies-they are despicable bunch, who know the limits of their influence, which is the precise reason they support the current Indian government, despite making all sorts of threats.

IF you didn’t know, the right-wing BJP also supports the Iran pipeline option? So what does that make them???

I would have to agree, it isn’t our business.

So let’s pull our troops (all of them) back behind our borders, fortify OUR country, end all subsidies to ALL other governments. End ALL outsourcing and H1B visas, end our alliances (except for Israel) and tell the rest of the world to go to hell and they deal with the jihadis on their own.

It would make a difference to us. America would give a shit. You see, we care about what America wants, not what other countries want. We don’t care whether you give a shit about anything. Not a damn thing.

The BJP has the luxury of spouting nonsense since they are in opposition. Here is an article from the BJP magazine in favor of the pipeline to Iran, but suggesting an undersea route rather than one over Pakistan. I guess they don't like the idea of paying billions in fealty to Pakistan? I don’t see BJP leaders traveling to Pakistan and gushing about how the “peace pipeline” will create “interdependencies” between India and Pakistan like the commies are.

An undersea route is as stupid as an overland one through Paki territory-both are unfeasible & vulnerable.Sure, they have the luxury of saying what they want-but the talk of a peace pipeline started when they were around.Left to me,I still believe that this pipeline will never materialise for obvious reasons.
