“But he (Fred) acknowledged that, with Florida’s earlier Jan. 29 primary, the Sunshine State will play a more critical role than ever in determining who wins the Republican ticket.”

I’m a “Fred Head” here in Florida and have been ready to sign up to help here in the sunshine state! Where do I sign up? :) Go Fred!

“Is Fred Thompson a solid conservative?”

He’s a consistent federalist, which is a classic conservative, but he’s not an activist social conservative a the federal level.

For example, he supports overturning Roe v. Wade — BUT he is against Federal laws against abortion (except re: abortions on military bases or something where there is a clear federal link).

He believes it to be a state-level issue.

At the state-level (Tennesee), he’s for laws restricting abortion. He does not speak for other states on the issue.

Same thing with: .08 BAC, certain federal tort reforms, and many other things that he likes -— but believes should be addressed at the state level.

There are nanny-staters on the right here at F.R. who don’t like this states-rights, federalism, approach.

Me, I think it’s about time we recognize that the founders of our nation created a structure with states in it for a reason.

I would support a Thompson run for POTUS 100%, but I have this underlying fear that, if nominated, he would tap McCain for Veep.

I've said this on another thread, but I don't think McCain's interested in running for Vice President. If Fred is nominated, and if Fred chooses a running mate as an olive branch to the "McCain wing", it'll be Tim Pawlenty.

However, I still see Mitt Romney as Fred's most likely running mate if he wins the nomination but not by a landslide. Not my pick, certainly, but perhaps what's called for depending on the situation in fall 2008.

I could see Fred tapping Newt for Veep, too.
