The most interesting part of his role as the DI is that he never steps out of character.

“Hmm - I wouldnt have thought R. Lee would be the type to dot his Is with circles.”

He rose to the rank of staff NCOErmey rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

From his website: Ermey spent eleven years in the Marine Corps, Two of which were spent as being a Drill Instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, India Company 3rd Recruit Training Battalion 1965-67, Arrived in Vietnam in 1968 spending 14 months attached to Marine Wing Support Group 17 and 2 tours in Okinawa. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was medically retired for injuries received.
On May 17, 2002 he received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) by Commandant James L. Jones, becoming the first retiree in the history of the Marines to be promoted. Don't know how the honorary promotion works, but I do know that he uses the title Gunnery Sergeant when he come to Okinawa and I think he wears the rank. His website shows him wearing the E-7 rank.
Being an old Air Force guy and not a military film fan, I never knew who he was until about 3 year years ago. Had the good fortune to meet him and chat for a while when he came out last year. He and I and two of my coworkers, sitting in the office just shooting the bull. Good guy. Wild eyebrows.

R. Lee Ermey is one of the most successful and talented actors in film and television today. I love to see R. Lee in the movies, listen to him every time he's on the radio with a local talk show host, and watch Mail Call every chance I get. I do think it's a bit of a stretch to call him one of the most talented actors today. He mostly plays himself in the movies.
When I think of talented actors, I think of Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man". Now that's talent. If I didn't know he wasn't autistic, I would have wondered to this day how they got an autistic man to do that part. And I've worked with some of those people. That's talent.
Mr. Ermey, if you lurk here, please don't find me and kill me.
