While this is a heart wrenching story, I would suggest that a Purple Heart, given to those who were wounded or killed in war, is not an appropriate medal to bestow on an animal. It does not surprise me that a Nam vet would be the one to do it.
"Just gimme the aspirin. I already gotta Purple Heart."
I don't quite know what you meant by the snide remark about the vet, but I would suggest that if the rightful owner of said Purple Heart felt moved to give his medal to an animal, it is appropriate. It could be argued that it's inappropriate for the govt. to do so, but not the recipient.
He had three. Who are you to tell this man what to do with any of them? Unnecessary snottiness on your part.
