Poll: Most Say Ready for Next Disaster ( Women and minorities ...)
Associated Press ^ | May 14, 2007 | ALAN FRAM

Most people say their families and local emergency agencies are ready for the next natural disaster but the federal government is not. Women and minorities are less confident on both counts.

A poll on the subject was released Monday, less than three weeks before the official start of an Atlantic hurricane season that some forecasters say will be an active one...

Two-thirds of people said their local first responders were prepared for a disaster, while nearly as many said their hospitals and families were ready. Only three in 10 expressed the same confidence in the federal government...

Ten percent more men than women, and 24 percent more whites than minorities, said their families are ready to cope with a disaster. More men and whites also expressed confidence that the federal government was ready.

Studies show that 'women tend to be more worried about threats, and they are still the principle person responsible for children or older parents' in times of trouble...

Easterners were likelier than people from other regions to say their families are not ready for a disaster. Two of three Southerners - the highest rate in the U.S. - said their families are prepared.

What a load. How do people know if the Feds are ready. Everybody has chosen the feds as their favorite whipping boy. Grow up people.

I’ve got guns, water, candles, sterno, cat food, nutrisystem, cash, medications including tamiflu, batteries — but no radio or extra phone batteries (but I do have my car — gassed up).

How about you?

The best way...

Individuals, families, local communities...the last resort is the feds.

They tell us in Florida to be prepared to be on your own for up to three days after a hurricane.

Agreed.
It’s called personal responsibility.

More people need to try it.

“...and horses for emergency transportation when everything else is broken or out of fuel.”

Thanks for the tip, Farmer Dean! I’m a spaz about keeping our Tornado/Blizzard Emergency Supply Kit up to snuff. And I want a horse and a milk cow; DH is dragging his feet. (We have 60 free-ranging chickens which would still provide eggs; you can eat them raw or cooked.)

Now I have a GREAT case to make for getting both a milk cow AND a horse! :)

Having a dependable bike helps too, if the roads aren’t too blown to bits or too filled with debris.

I would also add a wind-up radio (which we have) and cots and sleeping bags. Dry socks. Lots of ammo, gun oil and a good gun cleaning kit.

And a manual can opener, LOL!

We are prepared for a few weeks.

It would be ugly but possible.

Looking forward to another natural disaster, are we? Whether meteorological or seismic, fire or flood, we'll never know until the event occurs.

We are becoming Cassandras and Jeremiahs on the issue needlessly. Of course we should prepare for the worst but in our planning expect to recover better off than before.

Sixteen acres of lava bench dropped into the sea last week over here. No casualties since it was away from the tourist viewing sites at the National Park and too soon for the Realtors and developers to market oceanfront properties.

Been in hurricanes in the East, typhoons in Asia, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes here and have concluded there's not a damn thing to stop any of them.

You raise an excellent, oft-ignored point:

When we return to the stone age, bicycles will be the equivalent of the Jetson's flying car. Those who have, and maintain, them will be at a great advantage over those who don't.

Sure, I'd like to have a horse, but my apartment manager won't let me.
