A Mishawaka family business is showing support for a Marine under fire from the military. LCpl. Justin Sharratt is facing murder charges.
Military prosecutors say he is one of three enlisted Marines who took part in the killing of 24 innocent Iraqis civilians in Haditha in November 2005.
Sharrat grew up in Granger and graduated from Penn High School in 2003. One of his fellow Marines said they ambushed houses after their convoy hit a roadside bomb and killed a Marine.
A local family is also on Sharratt's side at their restaurant in Mishawaka. The family that runs Coney Express believes Sharratt was following orders and they wanted to do something to stand behind him.
As Jamie Bonder is busy working at Coney Express after the lunchtime rush, she is part of an effort to scrape together money for the defense of Sharratt, the fellow Penn High School classmate and graduate.
He faces murder charges in what military prosecutors say was revenge killing, not combat fighting in Iraqi civilian deaths.
"I don't think the government is being fair," Bonder said. "He was out there risking his life. People attacked him. He should have the right to attack back."
She knows Sharratt, especially through a mutual friend who also served in Iraq, and she is close to the Sharratt family.
She learned more about the case from Sharratt's family's standpoint at their Web site, justinsharratt.com.
She then asked about putting out the donation jar on the counter at the restaurant.
"My mom's like, 'go for it,'" she said.
As Bonder, her mom, and other friends follow the events of the charged Haditha Marines, they'll keep the jar out for a while before sending it to Sharratt's parents in Pennsylvania and hope he is exonerated at an upcoming hearing.
"The way it's going, it could go either way at this point," Bonder added.
Sharrat faces his hearing on June 11.
Very neat story - bttt.
BTTT
After last week's sworn testimony by United States Marines, do you think the msm will dispense with this charade?
ping.
Thanks for posting this, Red and thanks to the Bonder’s at the Coney Express for supporting Justin Sharratt and the Marines.
God bless you, Red. I have sent money for their defense on several occasions, but will scrape together a few more dollars to send. It’s a little more difficult now, because I am sending my candidate all that I can, too. Could you please list the addresses collecting defense funds for the Haditha Eight again for everyone’s information? Thank you.
South Bend(Notre Dame) is right next door. Must be some FReepers there
Very nice. It is good to see some folk really get it.
And, on a lighter note:
“One of his fellow Marines said they ambushed houses after... “
I never had to ambush a house. I can only imagine what a job that would be. First you have to sneak by the house or know the house’s usual travel routes, then you have to set up your ambush and wait, wait, wait, wait for the house to wander by so you can bag it.
And, what kind of ambush is best fit for house hunting? L shaped? Near far?
We all know the answer to that....FFC.
Big Haditha hero BUMP.
The rest of the link is here guys http://www.wsbt.com/news/7499797.html
I live in south bend right next door to mishawaka and this was on the news tonight. If I get a chance I will be stopping by this weekend to put some money in the jar. I keep kosher, so I dont eat out much. The truth is they are just collecting it and forwarding it to justins defense fund regardless. You might want to donate directly.
A google search brought this up
Coney Express

enjoy!
Yep. When hell freezes over.
And, since you brought up the issue of house ambushing, what weapon is recommended, and where does one shoot a house? Where is the vital spot to assure a one shot kill?
After all, one can’t have wounded houses running all over the area!
Thanks, hoosier! If you get a chance to stop by, thank ‘em for us! (Maybe they have a decent fruit cup!)
Wish I lived closer so that I could order 100 hotdogs from this place. I’d be able to eat about 5, but the other 95 would be purchased on principle alone.
My pleasure, guys. BTW, the Sharratts moved from Indiana a few years ago. Where did they end up? In Pennsylvania—John Murtha’s district.
