American College of Pediatricians Calls for End to Embryonic Stem Cell Research

GAINESVILLE, May 14, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The American College of Pediatricians (ACP) has called for an end to embryonic stem cell research and recommends the exclusive support of already proven effective adult stem cell research. "Not only does embryonic research require taking the life of human embryos, it also prolongs needless suffering by delaying the development of more promising adult stem cell treatments and cures," stated Michelle Cretella, MD, Fellow of the American College of Pediatricians.

Research using non-embryo sources of stem cells, including amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood, placenta and adult blood, fat and various organs, have yielded impressive results, the organization suggests.

"Adult stem cells are now routinely used in certain forms of cancer therapy. Over the last decade, these cells have been used to successfully treat spinal cord injuries, heart failure, Parkinson's disease, diabetes and dozens of other conditions in human trials."

The group noted further that "This has not been the case with any embryonic stem cell trial. Instead, there have been catastrophic results with these cells producing the wrong tissue, forming tumors and triggering immune rejection."

Concluding the ACP said, "Every dollar spent on the failed and unnecessary process of embryonic stem cell research steals resources away from the established utility and potential of adult stem cell research. This is fiscally irresponsible and medically unconscionable."

A free and virtuous society, which America aspires to be, must reject practices that devalue and violate human life at any stage from conception until natural death.

In defending the right to life, in law and through a vibrant culture of life, America can show a world the path to a truly humane future in which man remains the master, not the product of his technology.

What you said.

This is HUGE! But we’re probably the ones who will have to spread the news. Hopefully, Rush etal will get on it tout suite.

Yep.

Though IIRC there is a corresponding group to The American College of Pediatricians (ACP) which is PRO-ESCR & abortion.

Praise God! At last the voice of reason. As my daughter said, “An embryonic stem cell is a cell that desperately wants to become a baby, and if it can’t it becomes a tumor.” This is about the best non technical description that I have heard.

Yes, you are correct. The American Academy of Pediatrics is the organization that most pediatricians belong to. It is pro-leftist on every topic from Gay Adoption to pro-Abortion. The American College of Pediatrics is a shadow conservative organization with a small membership.

What this group seems to be calling for goes far the debate over public funding of embryonic stem cells (very cool).

Besides, pumping billions into ESCR is diverting billions from adult stem cell research and practical applications that are already proven to work!

Besides, pumping billions into ESCR is diverting billions from adult stem cell research and practical applications that are already proven to work! Do you suppose states like CA and NJ commit such taxpayer monies because the voters do not have a clue what is factual since the leftist pukes in the media have obfuscated the truth of the two lines of research? Yeah, that’s a big portion of the foolishness.

You can include MA in that list, as well. One of the major companies doing ESC research is here in Worcester, and the new Democrat governor is falling all over himself to get them public funding. Just think what kinds of wonderful things they could do if they concentrated on Adult stem cells? As you stated, most folks have no clue as to the difference, and are usually swayed by the 'hard cases', just as they are with abortion.

YES!

But then, IMO, ESCR is really about brainless human cloning and the organ replacement market, anyway.

Media emphasize that which fits their agenda of liberalizing the nation ... hrad cases are all that they will publicise and always on the side of killing the alive unborn as the utilitarian thing to solve a difficulty. Now they just promote using the remains for treating older human beings. ... Murder is utilitarian so don’t waste the leftovers from the deed don’tchaknow.

What is needed is an ad campaign of some sort, to educate people that embryonic stem cell research is a useless attempt to justify more abortions and to provide funding to researchers with no conscience.

As my daughter said, “An embryonic stem cell is a cell that desperately wants to become a baby, and if it can’t it becomes a tumor.” This is about the best non technical description that I have heard.

Your daughter has put the whole argument in one brilliant sentence.

I wish the alternative term to "embryonic" wasn't "adult" when "adult" means any cell made after the embryo is a few months old. Does your daughter have any suggestions for a better word?

Every dollar spent on the failed and unnecessary process of embryonic stem cell research steals resources away from the established utility and potential of adult stem cell research. This is fiscally irresponsible and medically unconscionable.

Not to mention that those dollars make the funders (including tax payers in California) vampires.
