Vlad Tepes Dracul "The Impaler" who ruled Wallachia was a Slav. He was also the scourge of the Muslemans and Turks whom he impaled. If it were not for good old Vlad who stopped the Turks cold where he stood we might today be praying towards Mecca.

I think that you will find that he was a little unstable.
Stephen Hunyadi of Hungary did a better overall job.

The other thing that makes Vlad III an interesting figure is that he knew and suffered from disloyalty and treachery among his own (his own brother converted to Islam and was supported by the Turks against him) yet (if you believe the popular Romanian view of him, as I do, rather than the West's invented Count Dracula caricature) he strove to provide law and order in the lands he ruled.
As for the Impaler stuff, practically everybody was insanely brutal in those days, by our standards.
