Two Ulaanbaatar students have died after eating Chinese-made instant noodles. The noodles, which come in a red packet and cost Tg 150 or US$0.10, are widely sold in shops here. The Mongolian news website www.oops.mn reported the deaths last week.
The noodles are thought to have contained toxic waste water which went undetected during the production process in China.
There is a real risk from these contaminated products and we will not sell these noodles again until we are completely sure they are safe, said Chris Essier, marketing manager at Everyday supermarket in the students quarter, a major stockist of the noodles.
We have removed all Chinese-produced instant noodles from our stores and now only sell Korean and Japanese varieties.
However, traders at the Bombogor Wholesale Center and in smaller shops around Ulaanbaatar continue to sell the noodles. We still sell them as customers still want to buy them, said one trader who asked not to be named.
There are many brands of noodles available, imported from South Korea, Japan and Russia, but only a few people buy these. The Chinese noodles are much cheaper and sell much more.
The traders said that the noodles brand was particularly popular with students because they are cheap and convenient to cook. Most of the students living in dormitories usually eat noodles and buy their food from Everyday. Sometimes it is nice to eat something that is quick and easy to make, said S.Bat-Olzii, a university student. However, he admitted that since the deaths he had stopped eating instant noodles from China. Some of the students mentioned that they thought eating a lot of instant noodles was unhealthy.
Also known as “Ramen” noodles.
That said, almost all the Ramen sold in the US is actually still made here.

The Korean ones are better, IMO!
College kids hit hardest!
I spent 3 weeks there in September 05, under NO circumstances are you to drink the water unless it is boiled or comes from a bottle!
If Walmart dumps China, the bubble will burst...
Hmmmm I wonder it this is a plot by the Chinese to poison the world.
“Buy no food from China knowingly.”
We should demand that the govt. sees to it that we know if even a little bit of the ingredients come from China.
Do not eat any food especially noodles from Walmart!
It’s a cheap way for them to get rid of their toxic waste that’s for sure.
Not even dog food from China is safe. So why trust human food?
Why trust the Chinese? Period!!
Commie bastards.
were they organic?
“That said, almost all the Ramen sold in the US is actually still made here.”
But where do the ingredients come from...if you know please?
Many of the crew we work with eat those instant noodle lunches.
You can't make this stuff up!
I'll say.
3 seconds, well done!
You would be shocked what comes from China. I saw apple juice which said that the concentrate was made in USA, and produced in China. So it is possible “toxic waste water” could be in your child’s juice as well. And what about “memory foam” mattresses from China...do they contain toxic chemicals to save money, which aren’t present in American and European products? The list is absolutely endless, and worrisome.
