No to Bush-Kennedy

By The Editors

“The fight over legalization, or ‘amnesty,’ is all but over,” exults the Manhattan Institute’s Tamar Jacoby, and the “yahoos” who oppose it have been routed. She is right about who has won, at least as far as the Senate is concerned. The Bush-Kennedy immigration “reform,” which is now expected to win broad bipartisan support in that chamber, provides legal status for an estimated 12 million illegal aliens. In exchange for the massive, unpopular amnesty, Senator Kennedy is willing to engage in a little “border dressing” that purports to beef up enforcement of current laws barring illegal entry and the employment of illegal workers. As in the past, supporters of border and workplace enforcement will get the rhetoric, illegal aliens the prize, and taxpayers the huge tab.

The 1986 immigration reform, with amnesty provisions that were implemented and enforcement provisions that weren’t, is instructive. But there is no need to hark back 20 years to illustrate the bad faith of “comprehensive” immigration reformers. Before last year’s elections, the Secure Fence Act, providing for the construction of a 700-mile fence at the southern border, handily passed Congress. In this week’s Republican presidential debate, Rep. Duncan Hunter, the fence bill’s House sponsor, angrily noted, “We have $1 billion cash on hand at the Department of Homeland Security right now for building the border fence. . . . They have done two miles. I think they want to drag their feet and hook this up with amnesty.” They do and they now have.

The Bush administration’s price for its modestly beefed-up border security and workplace enforcement is amnesty for millions and a temporary-worker program for a few hundred thousand more each year. And the proposal’s conservative features vanish upon inspection.

Tony Snow was on Rush yesterday touting the
bill. He cited the tough new requirements the illegals will have to meet to stay in the country but I can guarantee you a Democratic President will remove or ignore those requirements or more likely simply refuse to enforce them. The bill is a joke as far as the American taxpayer is concerned.

Finally, the enormous cost of granting legal status to millions of illegal aliens is being wholly ignored. Nearly two-thirds of illegal immigrants are low-skilled workers. Based on a detailed analysis of the net cost of low-skill households, Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation estimates that the typical illegal-alien household receives $19,588 more in benefits than it pays in taxes each year. He explains that these costs would increase dramatically when an illegal alien reached retirement. Rector estimates that if all current illegal aliens were granted amnesty, the net retirement costs (benefits minus taxes) could be over $2.5 trillion.

This is a disaster.

The rich have their cheap labor.

Once again, the middle class gets screwed by the blue-blood Bush family.

God this disgusts me.

Bush knows what he is doing, & he is just as guilty of destroying this country as Kennedy.

I am calling for the impeachment of Bush based on his failure to secure our borders & ignoring current immigration law. Perhaps if many more conservatives were to chime in, Bush would rethink this disaster of a legacy.

Conservatives should align themselves with libs to remove this back stabbing jerk from office. Cheney as president would be much preferred & could put some spine back into the Presidency. As an added bonus, Cheney MIGHT even win in Iraq & Afghanistan.

I believe the immigration failures are a more serious problem than terrorism, & will cause more long term damage to our country, culture, & society than terrorism ever will. And our open borders are an easy way for terrorists to come here.

If this garbage passes & he signs it, his legacy will rank right up there with Quisling & Arnold.

Go to DU and they will love you there. You can forge a coalition with the traitors to impeach the President in times of war. For the last 50 years President Bush is the only President who paid attention to the illegal immigration issue, unlike the many Presidents before him who did nothing about it.

If we truly wanted to we could end the WOT immediately, however most of the world would not have the stomach for it. Allowing 15 million criminal aliens and their families strangle us with the help of elected officials is suicide. I agree, this immigration mess is our demise. Our own goverment will have taken from us and our future generations more than any terrorist could.

How can you end the war on terror immediately? May be you can enlighten us.

You cannot deport the 15 millions illegal immigrants neither by force nor by getting very tough on the employers who hire them. The best solution is to greatly secure the borders, and give the illegal immigrants here a temporary working status to be renewed every 2 years with a $ 1000 fee, but those illegal immigrants will not have any path to citizenship what so ever. We need to get realistic about this illegal immigration issue and stop living in fantasy world.

You don’t think we have the military might to bring islamic terrorists to their knees? Do you think having our soldiers and marines be social workers and construction workers are helping? Do you think that having the media and our own goverment second guess every action they take helps? Please, we have sent our brave men and women to fight with one hand tied behind their backs. If we truly let loose on the fools, they’d be begging for mercy now. If we quit talking out of both sides of our mouth and truly stood up to these insane people it would be over.

As far as the illegals go you cut everything off and they leave on their own. No jobs and no welfare bennies, I would think they would not have much of a choice. Also explain to me what becomes of these “guest workers” children born here? Do they get the automatic citizenship? Let’s also get realistic about the children of these guest workers. Show me any study or statistic that shows that the children of illegals actually take advantage of the free education they receive. There is none. Language barriers is a farce, the children of immigrants from asia toss that one right out of the window. Funny, they have a language barrier too but manage to surpass everyone educationally. Realistically, we cannot absorb and assimilate people whose first step on our soil was criminal. They don’t want to be American. Maybe years ago they did, but not now. Not when they have LaRaza telling them we owe them, that the laws don’t matter, that they are entitled. And another thing, if these 15 million workers were actually screened like the rest of the people who are patiently waiting in line, I would bet that 14 million of them wouldn’t be allowed in because they could not meet the criteria.

Ah. So you figure since GWB aligned himself with the biggest Lib in DC on this issue, his is the conservative stance, & mine is liberal. And, the premise of your argument is that since GWB's predecessors did nothing, opening the flood gates is a good thing. Nonsense!

You need to stop gazing at that signed pic of you & GWB so much, & realize he has sided with the libs on this one - AGAINST the American taxpayers, which includes me.

You are wrong about the last 50 years. Reagan signed an amnesty bill for illegals during his time in office, & promised it would end illegal immigration. The results are currently obvious, & since then, GHWB, Clinton, & GWB have failed to secure our borders.

Riddle me this? What good is it to screen people at our airports, when terrorists can easily cross our borders
on foot or maybe even on camels? Drugs pour across the border, why not terrorists?

Suppose tomorrow, a terrorist successfully detonates a WMD in the USA & kills thousands of people; & we find out he crossed into the USA illegally from Mexico last month. Whose fault will that be? Where does the buck stop? Hint: Law Enforcement & Border Security are responsibilities of the Executive Branch of government in the USA.

We need to make the rules of engagements tougher but even then it still require a long time to destroy the terrorists, that is the nature of this war and the President has been telling us this since 9/11. You cannot annihilate a city of 100,000 people because they have 2,000 terrorists hiding there among the population, it will not happen, period. We have to go inside the city, chase the terrorists, kill and capture them.

Illegal immigrants must not have access to welfare even if they were granted temporary worker status. You simply cannot cut the jobs for all illegal immigrants because many small businesses hire illegal immigrants mostly restaurants, gas stations, small construction firms, etc... Cutting those workers will greatly hurt many small businesses and thus hurt the economy. So it is better to make them legal by granting them temporary worker status and collect taxes from them and fees to have and keep their status.

As far as children of illegal immigrants born in the US, you need to amend the Constitution to prevent people born here from non American parents to become US citizens by birth.
