Can’t really expect the Chinese to be seriously concerned.
There the death of a dog or a cat is an occasion for a barbecue.

The government body responsible for overseeing food safety said it accompanied US Food and Drug Administration inspectors on visits to two companies blamed for the chemical contamination.
Well, there wasn't much to see on those visits, since the factories were closed down, and the machinery dismantled.
US inspectors said wheat gluten exported by the firms and used to make pet food was tainted with a mildly toxic melamine and caused the deaths of an unknown number of dogs and cats.
It was more likely crude cyanuric acid (which is 30% melamine), but hey, melamine sounds a whole lot better -- after all, they make eating utensils with it, don't they?
And how inconsiderate of those animals to die from something so "mildly toxic." Have they no consideration for the global economy?

Chinese authorities have detained an undisclosed number of managers from the two companies.

China might get away with sell that line to their own people, but that doesn’t fly here.

Ditto on the Nuts.
Two of my cats have been sick since their food (Science Diet MD dry) was recalled in late March.

I suspect a ban on Chinese gluten imports might get them to change their minds about inspection.

Probably technically correct. There were no contaminants in the cyanuric acid or melamine, so you can say that those ingredients were pure.
