Drug War: Mexico's battle against drug traffickers is getting dicier by the day. Officials there have asked for U.S. aid, and we should give it to them. But they must be serious about victory.
Late last year, Mexico's new president, Felipe Calderon, made an impressive start by tackling drug traffickers as soon as he was sworn in. His boldness was a direct response to Mexican voters, who told IBD on election day that nothing mattered to them more.
It wasn't hard to see why. Like a rat infestation, Mexican drug dealers had grown strong in an earlier atmosphere of ineffectual enforcement. By the time Calderon got in, they didn't even conceal their presence. Like an occupying force, they controlled a fourth of the nation (and half its airspace) and killed with al-Qaida-like savagery.
The newly appointed head of a drug intelligence unit was shot and killed Monday on a street in Mexico City. Calderon sent in 24,000 troops to retake cities and states with the most serious violence Michoacan , Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana and Acapulco. Soldiers, less likely to be tainted by corruption than local police, burned crops and hauled away drug dealers of all levels.
Calderon warned Mexicans not to expect a short war, but it has proved even harder than that. Drug lords are now engaging in unprecedented battles with the army. Five dead soldiers this past week in Michoacan amounts to that state's worst single death toll in a decade, and they weren't the only casualties.

Does the gang that owns the current government taking over the trade constitute a win?
Exactly.
What? And lose Mexico's biggest export?
There certainly is a drug war going on there, but it’s more over drugs than against drugs.
Mrs VS
Not as long as Americans are such great customers.
Sure, just ship all of the drug manufacturers and dealers to the US with the rest of the Mexican criminals. Our traitorous president will welcome them as new Democrat voters. Mexico will get rid of more of their scum and they'll even send money back to Mexico to boot.
Sure they can. And I heard pigs fly in Mexico, also.
... and not allowed to grow their own. If the profits from the trade weren't so high, the profits that drive these gangs would drop.
Win a drug war? Ha! Mexico is corrupt to its core.
It’s beginning to look like we’re importing that culture here, too.
Say what you will about Mexico, they are not to be taken lightly. Mexico is on the cusp of doing something the old Soviet Union was unable to do, bring down the United States of America.
All hail Mexico.
Mexico's biggest problem is the drug dealers have the cash to buy off the policia, military and government officials.
Yeah, but only on Mondays.
I haven't seen any great victories from western nations in the WOD for a long time.
