I was in the Navy at that time serving onboard a DDG (i.e., USS Robison DDG 12)

I DO vividly remember this in the news though because we had left the Persian Gulf a few months earlier.

I also remember seeing this Newsweek magazine at the local Navy Exchange and buying a copy:
