No, not a joke, and yes, while there are people from all over the world (incld Poles and Scots and even Chinese), the rank-and-file of the participants (esp., and the middle/upper tier, which is where I am) are from the Northern European countries.

There is a very authoritarian side to Germanic Europe, especially found in Germany, that is passed down parent-to-child to this day. I lived in France and Switzerland and spent months at a time in Germany and the character change when switching language regions is so telling.

I have experienced this first hand: quickly parking in a “red zone” to run into a shop to grab something, say. In Germany, a passer-by will stop you and shout, “HEY! You can’t park here!” They might even try to verbally prevent you from entering the store. In France, the passer-by will conspiratorally say with a smile that he saw a flic (cop) one street over, so you’d better be careful so you don’t get a ticket.

Extremly ridicolous BS.

First and foremost is the realization that, while not all Germans are anti-Semitic, there is an anti-Semitic tendency within German culture that extends back to the time of Martin Luther.

The problem might be that you find in the whole western world some antisemitism among primitive people. And not just since Martin Luther. This is no specific German problem.

The irony is, that in Germany antisemitism does not play a significant role anymore, because today there are only a handful of real Jews that live in my country. We have simply not enough Jewish people in Germany left to give the plebs enough motivation to hate them. A German Jew is therefore rather interesting than unwanted. De facto the German antisemitic phantom is a unimpressive political Fata Morgana. Although we had higher Jewish immigration than Israel during the 90ties, since many Jews from Russia prefered the developed and peaceful Germany to the war-shaken Israel, Jewish life practically does not appear in the German public. Most of the (former) Russian Jews are absolutely secular and do not care a bit about Jewish traditions. This is the reason why the Jewish religion is something very strange to contemporary Germans, because they have practically no points (or even a chance) of contact.

The reason for the subliminal antisemitism that appears in isolated cases in Germany is different: Some modern Germans indeed do not like Israel that much, since they were overfeeded with too much pro-Israel and anti-Nazi propaganda in school on one hand and they are angry about the ongoing financial support after more than 60 years on the other. Nobody sane questions the Holocaust, but since 95% of the real Nazis are simply dust in the meantime, some of the great-grandchildren refuse wearing the penitential robe forever. The way some "do-gooders" celebrate the holocaust as their surrogate religion in Germany is indeed quite strange.

I.e. the oversized Holocaust-monument in Berlin has very little to do with history or true emotion. While the authentic, impressive and heartbreaking memorials -the former concentration camps in Germany- slowly disaggregate, a expensive, political correct fairy tale was stage-managed near the Brandenburg gate. The German people know that this memorial has nothing to do with the victims, they are well aware that it is the political correct mainstream celebration that was (and is) paid with their taxes against their will. Therefore this memorial has gotten the nickname "Hundeklo" (a place to walk to dog) since it is formed of a conglomeration of menhirs that shall illustrate the gravestones of the death Jews. A small army of security men is needed now to get into the way of dogs that follow their natural needs. Americans might think that this attitude of common Germans to joke about "holy places" reflects bottomless antisemitism. The opposite is true. It is just the (helpless) expression of opposition to a stone monster in the heart of Berlin that lacks any authenticity.*

There are many more examples like this that express the new denial to erect hollow altars like this "memorial". Some people in America and Israel understand this lack of devotion among the German public as the hellfire of antisemitism or antiamericanism. This is not true. It is simply the weariness about a -during the occupation of Germany- offically decreed attitude that is still present among the political correct leadership in my country. Germans are well aware about the crimes their (grand)grandfathers committed. On the other hand they know that it were not the Germans of today that left this mess. This fact finds its expression in the unselfconscious interaction with history most young Germans have today. They know that the flow of time is washing all guilt away.

* Besides - the memorial for Holocaust in Berlin is restricted to murdered Jews only. There was a fierce fight between the Roma and Sinti (gypsies, who lost roundabout 1/2 million people in the Holocaust) and the German Jewish community over this memorial that reminded in its fashion to dumbest racism. Now there is stringent racial segregation in the remembrance of Holocaust victims in Germany among their grandchildren. If Hitler ever knew he would have died of laughter.

It is pure BS. Such anecdotal crap is nonsense. In Germany, you can be prosecuted if you make public pronouncements that there was no holocaust. There is far more anti-semitism in France.

In the last 15 years, the number of Jews in Germany has gone from 28,000 to well over 200,000. It's all part of the country's policy to rebuild Jewish communities destroyed by the Nazis. Attracted by generous social services, many came from Eastern Europe, especially the former Soviet Union.
