General: China deepening ties to Africa

WASHINGTON, May 17 (UPI) -- China is extending its economic reach into Africa as it has in South America, according to the U.S. military commander responsible for the continent.

Gen. Bantz Craddock, the commander of U.S. European Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee China is bringing workers to Africa to extract the natural resources it needs to fuel its booming economy. If the pattern follows that which the Chinese pursued in South America when Craddock headed U.S. Southern Command, the Chinese are likely carrying out humanitarian projects in exchange for the access "that provide some services or capabilities to nations who have no other way to get (them)," he said.
