There are just a few videos you can find on the internet showing the environmental disaster in China. Without doubt this is the biggest environmental disaster since the Soviets used to pour nuclear waste into their rivers.
If they treat their #1 cultural landmark like a garbage can, I'm not surprised they'd treat everything else around them the same way.
Last year on my way to Vietnam I flew over China and saw bright green smoke hovering over a city. The pollution was obvious.
Should it turn out that mankind is causing global warming, we could all go back to living in teepees and China would destroy the world all on its own.
I count my self as a good conservative. And as a good conservative, and a world citizen, it is my duty to take care of the enviroment. Off course.
But we have to be clear thinkers in the matters of China and pollution.
1) China has approx. 1/5 of the world population. Because of this there will be a lot of pollution.
2) China is developing. They are not up there with the western civilization yet, and won’t be for some time. For a period we can compare China’s situation with the industrial phase in the UK some 100 years ago. And that was nasty stuff.
3) We can’t stop capitalism. These things must, and will, regulate themselves.
4) China’s problem is, and has been for some time, C O M M U N I S M. But thanks to capitalism, that pest will go away, sooner or later, although the Chineese people’s affinity for mass movements (it’s in their culture and soul) will make this process more prolonged than in Russia. Money turns, whether you are a member of the Party or not.
And when you have a free population and a free market, the people will decide that clean air is in their best interest and legislation will follow to prevent uncontrolled pollution.
Voila.
Both freedom and clean air.
If you find videos like you described please post them here and on other discussion boards. The world should see these videos.
It is something of a misunderstanding to think that China is switching over to capitalism as we understand it. They still have a Communist government. The government controls the money and the flow of goods and raw materials. The government controls the banks and loans. The economy is basically a command economy, with orders to build new plants coming down from above to their clients. The government has handed out at least 500 billion in bad debt to keep their clients happy. The actual figure is probably closer to a trillion.
This is more like the old Soviet 5 Year Plans than Western Capitalism, IMHO. Even the scale of polution is similar. Polution in the US even during the worst years was never as bad as it was in the Soviet Union or East Germany or in present day China. It was bad in South Korea and Japan during some stages of their development, but never as bad as this.
Shortly after the fall of East Germany, I had a chance to drive through it. I was just amazed at the destruction. Barren trees, soot covered houses, just a hellhole.
And let's not forget why 1990 was chosen as a baseline amount for countries to reduce their emissions. All of Eastern Europe and Russian communsists fell by then. As a result, emissions were cut by 40% by 1991 simply because the communists were not around to continue polluting with impunity!
Which means these countries were given a pass by Kyoto.
Unfortunately, we are in the path of their pollution.
Besides, they make enough money off their slave labor they could certainly pay to upgrade their industries.
Unlike the British of 100 years ago, the technology is there.
And that is why the Chinese government in many cities has banned motorized scooters, forcing people to use electric scooters and bicycles instead.
