Canada Sees Drop in Teen Pregnancy Rate but Abortion Rate Higher

Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- Canada has seen a drop in the number of abortions and teenage pregnancies as both numbers are declining to their lowest levels in some time. The teen pregnancy rate is at its lowest mark but the abortion rate has increased even though the number of abortions has declined.

Those figures come from a new report from the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada.

Alex McKay, research co-ordinator and author of the study, told the Toronto Globe and Mail newspaper that the numbers are down because of an increased use of birth control rather than an increase in teenager practicing abstinence.

The study shows that about 33,000 teenagers 19 or younger get pregnant every year and more than half, 18,000, of those end in abortion. About 15,000 pregnant teens decided to give birth.

The group published its study in today's edition of the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality and it showed that the Canada pregnancy rate for teens fell to 32.1 per 100,000 population in 2003 from 53.9 per 100,000 in 1974.

However, the abortion rate on teenagers over the same period increased to 17.1 per 100,000 from 13.9 per 100,000 even though the number of teenage abortions is declining.

Overall in Canada, there are about 330,000 lives birth each year and about 110,000 abortions.

The new figures come just days after several thousand pro-life advocates participated in the nation's annual March for Life.

It comes on the heels of a call by a US-based abortion industry group for more doctors and hospitals in Canada to do abortions

In May 1969, the Canadian government approved the passage of a bill that took off the books many of the protective laws the nation had in place.

Then, in January 1988, the nation's abortion law was struck down from the Criminal Code by the Supreme Court of Canada resulting in full legal abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy.

As a result, there have been more than 3 million abortions in Canada, resulting the death of babies before birth and injuring countless women.

I can’t fault Canada’s teen girls for being Less Willing to be impregnated, or for being Less Willing to carry an UNwanted fetus.

I don’t KNOW when a SOUL becomes part of the Fetus. Neither Moses, nor Jesus passed that Info on to mankind.

I doubt that a miscarriage is a Sin.

Ergo, I doubt that an All-Knowing God would place a Soul into a Fetus bound for miscarriage or Abortion.

If you perceive a moral equivalence between abortion and miscarriage, then I'd advise you to just keep on driving your pizza wagon and leave the thinking to others.

This can only be true if the number of teenagers has declined more than the abortion rate has increased. I guess those 3 million abortions that already took place have had an impact.

It's good that the pregnancy rate has fallen, but 33,000 pregnant teens and 18,000 dead babies per year shows Canadian parents and sex ed programs aren't doing something right.

"Overall in Canada, there are about 330,000 lives birth each year and about 110,000 abortions."

Wow so around 25% percent of baby Canadians are killed every single year. My guess combine that with reproduction below replacement levels, and Canada could have a population problem in the future along with other European countries and mostly likely the U.S.

"As a result, there have been more than 3 million abortions in Canada, resulting the death of babies before birth and injuring countless women."

Wow! Three million dead children. Unfortunately here, the number is closer to 50 million.

Yes, but maybe compare rates rather than numbers of teenagers and rate of abortion.

However, an increase in teen abortions since 1974 is not relevant to this discussion, since abortion was decriminalized only in 1988. To claim that it is is a distortion by the authors of the posted article.

A National Post article from yesterday (May 17 edition) showed no increase in teen abortions on a graph starting in 1995, and the authors of the study in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality claimed that the decrease in teen pregnancies was not due to increased abortions, the opposite of what this article claims.

Furthermore, the statement "Then, in January 1988, the nation's abortion law was struck down from the Criminal Code by the Supreme Court of Canada resulting in full legal abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy" is incorrect. Partial birth abortions in Canada are illegal unless done to save the life of the mother.

This is an unreliable article.

The year 1988 is significant. Almost all teenagers now living were born since that year, and apparently enough were not born so that the number of teenage abortions is going down even though the average (living) teen is more likely to have an abortion than before.
