HYDERABAD, India (Reuters) - A bomb exploded during Friday prayers at a historic mosque in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, killing at least five people, police said.
Another 35 people were injured at Mecca Masjid, the main mosque in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh state.
Police said the death toll could rise and two other bombs were defused in the area.
Hundreds of men and boys in white prayer caps rushed out of the mosque following the explosion, local television showed.
Men in blood-soaked long white shirts were seen rushing through the crowds and getting into an ambulance.
After the blast, angry crowds fought pitched battles with police around the mosque, pelting stones and shouting "Allah is great!" Police fired tear gas and opened fire in the air.
Some people hurled stones at shops and vehicles.
Friday's attack was the third major bombing of a mosque in India over the last year. Each attack has sparked fears among authorities that communal unrest could be triggered between minority Muslims and majority Hindus.
Around 140 million people of India's billion-plus population are Muslims. Hindus make up more than 80 percent of the population.
Hyderabad, one of India's most important IT hubs, has a large Muslim population and several historic mosques.
"On Friday, at least 7 to 8,000 people perform the namaz (prayers) over there and the fatalities would have been much higher if the bomb took place five-six minutes before," Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi told local television.
A bomb blast killed 32 people last year at a mosque in the western state of Maharashtra, an attack which police blamed on a banned Islamic students group trying to spark communal tension.
Last year, two bomb explosions at New Delhi's main mosque, Jama Masjid, wounded 10 people.

Hmm, hard choice here.
But I’ll venture it’s more likely a workplace accident.
A third possibility is the muzzies did it intentionally to flame up hatred. After all, it’s never been a big deal to them to kill off a few of their own to advance their agenda.

I was wondering about that. I’ve seen occasional reports in the press - no, here on FR, the “real” newsource - about intra-Muslim conflict in India, but I don’t know enough about the situation. Is there a big conflict between the Sunnis and the Shiites there, or is there some other offshoot Muslim sect attacking the Muslim majority?
This is your brain on Islam. Of course you attack the police after a bomb goes off.

I’d rank it this way:
1> Shia-Sunni conflict.
2> Pakistani ISI agents, to spark Hindu-Muslim violence, which then gets them more recruits.
3> Like the article mentions, the SIMI activists, trying to spark violence.
4> Hindu radicals like someone mentioned(but there is no major cohesiveness among Hindus to plan/volunteer or execute this, unless there was some mass incident like the train-fire five years ago).
5> A “work-related” accident. The bomb exploding much before it was planned to.
Or the work of anybody trying to start a Muslim/Hindu civil war in India. Which could be al-Queda. Or it could be China
The biggest intra-Muslim conflict is between those who want to get along, raise their families, and do their jobs versus the Muslims who want every Muslim worldwide engaged in Jihad against the infidels.

Well, the Muslims have picked a fight with a group that has no problems with slaughtering every last one of them with little regard to Western sensibilities.

How do they know it was an “attack?” To me, it sounds like another case of the bombmaker making a mistake and setting off the bomb prematurely.
I don’t know...so far it looks like the muslims are doing all the slaughtering, while the Hindus just sit there taking it.
I wouldn’t exactly say that... through the years, each and every one of those market/ train/ restaurant blasts has slowly fuelled a counter-movement among city-dwellers, and college students. They are the ones who engage in/incite counter-riots. There’s massive anti-Muslim sentiment amongst India’s non-Muslim population, because of recent events, especially those of the last two decades. Companies are wary of hiring them, and people are afraid to lease/rent out their homes in the cities.
President Bush will be vindicated and the socialists in all world governments will be denied power.
