Media fury rages over swimsuit photo ban

A DECISION by Turkey's largest city to ban some pictures of swimsuit models has revived claims about the rising power of Islam, with newspapers saying the move was more befitting of theocratic Iran than a secular democracy.
Istanbul municipality asked stores selling swimwear made by Turkish manufacturer Nelson to seek permission to place photographs of models in swimsuits and bikinis on store front windows located on main streets.
It then denied them permission.
The controversy follows several large secularist protests in Turkey, a secular republic with an overwhelmingly Muslim population, against the ruling AK Party, which controls the Istanbul city authority and which has Islamist roots.
Secularists say AK wants to undermine Turkey's separation of state and religion and to boost the role of Islam in daily life, claims which the centre-right, pro-business party denies.
Is this becoming a land of mullahs like Iran? asked the Vatan daily, commenting on the row over the swimwear pictures.
Echoing that comment, the staunchly secular Cumhuriyet daily quoted local consultant Ali Saydam as saying: (The AK Party) is creating worries that they are turning Turkey into Iran.
This year four firms were denied permission to hang photographs in store windows, according to newspaper reports.
Moris Eskinazi, part owner of Nelson, told Reuters the need to seek municipality permission was new.
We've never had to get permission before, and they wanted us to bring a copy of the photographs we planned on putting up, he said.
'EU standards'
They said that the photographs were not up to EU standards and that they could cause car accidents, said Mr Eskinazi, quoting Istanbul's urban planning department.

Ever since when has the EU ever had ANY standards?
I recall in Europe somewhere (Denmark or Sweden or some such) that they used topless parking meter girls to get guys to notice the “buckle up seat belt” signs....perhaps they could adopt the same strategy in Turkey....?
I’ve been to Istanbul, and I don’t remember seeing anything like that :)
You know, I’ve always felt that the radical Muslim restrictions like these speaks volumes about how the faith perceives its male adherents. I know the Muslim faith was/is at heart a warrior faith but it seems to me that the faith wants its men to remain at an animalistic (or infantile?)level so everything that might tempt the animal part of men is strictly controlled or forbidden. Are Muslim men not to be trusted to deal in a civilized way with temptations?
I’m sure the fact that the current government in Turkey is getting lots of briefcases of money from the Saudis has nothing to do with this.
Must.........resist............temp..ta..tion!
“Are Muslim men not to be trusted to deal in a civilized way with temptations?”
Of course not. They are sociopaths. They have no empathy for others.
No, it is becoming a land of mullahs like Turkey.
“Of course not. They are sociopaths. They have no empathy for others.”
I know most of the world views them in this way but are their mullahs actually intentionally fostering this condition? I suppose if they support this type of psychological immaturity, then they want the men to be vicious killers on command. In their view, I guess Allah is demanding sociopaths as his due. Sad.
” are their mullahs actually intentionally fostering this condition?”
It’s traditional. Islamic males have always been sociopaths.

The first runner-up went to Miss Universe last year. The real Miss Turkey goes to the Miss World contest. Ms. Merve Ozsarac, last year’s Miss Turkey will be competing in this year’s Miss World pageant. Its probably some commercial thing. Miss Universe’s agreement with the organizers of the Miss Turkey pageant was probably cancelled or something. Someone else will pick it up next year as there are more than one Miss Turkey organizations anyway.
