Colombia says US Congress must stop "pariah" treatment

BOGOTA - Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe said on Friday the U.S. Congress must stop treating his government like a pariah over a scandal involving right-wing paramilitaries and approve a free-trade pact like those proposed with Peru and Panama.

Uribe is Washington's closest ally in Latin America but is struggling to convince U.S. Democrats who control Congress that he has curbed suspected ties between some of his political allies and illegal paramilitaries accused of atrocities.

"We will not accept approval of trade pacts for Peru and Panama and that Colombia, in this battle, gets treated like a pariah. That is unacceptable," Uribe said in a speech.

He angrily demanded that U.S. lawmakers respect his achievements in battling left-wing guerrillas and disarming their paramilitary enemies through a Washington-backed campaign to reduce violence after decades of insurgency.

"I ask Congress that they not be deaf to the reality of the advances we have made," Uribe said.

Why are we treating our best ally in the hemisphere like garbage? They've been our closest, most no-apology allies. They've given Hugo Chavez the finger. Why is Colombia, and not Venezuela, the pariah here? What is stinking wrong with Democrats? Abusing our best ally is not the way to have allies. Colombia doesn't deserve this.

The Dems don’t care. It’s all about Bush and the ‘08 election.

The Dem’s are treating Colombia like garbage, because Uribe is not a Communist!

Using the Colombian swat teams to exterminate the moonbats and enforce the laws always makes the dems/libs squirm...

Exactly my sentiments.

Most in Colombia really look up to America but yet many ignorant and or just plain stupid liberals want to bash them for trying to rid themselves of another Communist takeover.

The RATS want him out and another Hugo Chavez type to win there instead. Plain and simple. Would probably get them more money out of the Hollywood leftists, too.

Because, as you say, we ain’t Venezuela.

We don’t have enough oil even for internal consumption.

And the FARC allies in the Colombian Congress have done a bang-up job of discrediting President Uribe.

I wholeheartedly agree with Uribe. Pelosi and Co. treated him shamefully, and I’d be ticked off too!

Let me see if I’ve got this right.

Pelosi and company meet with Assad, who is directly responsible for the murders of American service personnel, but they won’t talk to Uribe, who is wiping out drug lords and Communists.

Pelosi and company are the SCUM of the earth.

“Why are we treating our best ally in the hemisphere like garbage?”

It’s the dem way...treat your allies like you treat your own country.

I was horried by this incident. But why aren’t Bush and Rice coming out to say something about it and give Uribe some support?

I think Bush now does whatever State tells him to do. Rice has been a major disappointment - she’s still technically continuing the original Bush policies, but she’s not defending them in any way and has hung former US allies out to dry. However, she seems to be pretty partial to our radical Muslim enemies, such as Iran, and tolerant of their cat’s paw, Hugo Chavez.

If I were a foreign head of state, there’s no way I’d consider allying with the US. We are unpredictable, undependable, and turn on our friends with no warning to them and no second thoughts for us.

I understand from some reliable sources that Colombia has enough oil reserves.

However, the FARC being egged on by Chavez keeps out drilling companies wanting to explore the country.
