Immigrant park rally renews call for rights

Among those in attendance were Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez (D-Los Angeles) and Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' San Gabriel Region, who called it a day of "peace and solidarity with all those who marched on May 1."

As he addressed the crowd, Villaraigosa also made reference to the May 1 melee at MacArthur Park, where police, pelted with bottles and rocks by agitators, were videotaped using batons and riot guns on the crowd, including reporters and photographers.

"Here in Los Angeles we all have the right to march peacefully," Villaraigosa said in Spanish to the cheering crowd. "We're here because we love this great country and we want to share in the American dream."

The mayor assured the demonstrators that the police actions were being investigated. Police Chief William J. Bratton, also present at the rally, last week reassigned the two top commanders at the park that day.

"Only with justice can we get to peace," Villaraigosa said, his remarks again met with applause and cheers.

Off in a corner of the park were Maria Elena Jimenez — carrying a sign that read "We R a Country of Immigrants" — and her sister Lorena, who has been in the U.S. for 20 years and is the only member of her family who is undocumented.

Lorena, who lives in Huntington Park and works as a maid, said she would like to obtain legal status so she could occasionally travel to her hometown of Cuernavaca, Mexico, to visit other family members she hasn't seen in years. She said many immigrants like her simply want to live and work in the U.S. in peace.

"We're the ones who deserve a chance," she said.

"We're the ones who deserve a chance,"

That's funny, the people who immigrate here legally seem to feel the same way. Now who's side should I take?

I’d like to see a new piece of legislation granting every natural US citizen a one-time amnesty for the felony of their choice. I think it’s only fair.

Nuñez called the proposal "good intentions but the wrong path" for immigrants, most of whom, he said, could not afford such steep fees.

They can't afford it because it would cut into the thousands they send home each week. My brother-in-law couldn't afford his speeding ticket but paid it, and likely won't do 100mph in a 70mph zone again.

Not controlling our borders properly over the last 30 years creates a very high potential for civil war in our country.

call for rights......"We're here because we love this great country and we want to share in the American dream."

After seeing Mexican flags waving and the American national anthem heartily booed at a U.S. vs. Mexico soccer game at the L.A. Coliseum in the late 90s I'm more than a bit skeptical about their love for our country. (Most of the 100,000 in attendence were rooting for Mexico, and those who didn't risked getting "urine bombs" hurled their way).

But for the small number that are sincere and wish to become Americans then here's some advice: do it legally. .....just like my great grandparents did over 100 years ago. Then you'll get your rights. In the meantime just be happy with your free health care and education and shut the heck up. Or far better yet, to back to your country and get in line.

The unmitigated gall and audacity of these people

They are in America illegally and they have an entitlement mentality worse than anyone. Imagine their arrogance when they are freely granted citizenship, welfare for life, voting rights, special low interest loans, exemptions from having to have licenses or insurance, etc. They will become an entitled class that will be given every preference. Future historians will note that the groundwork for the Second American Civil War began with the Bush Administration and his Democrat co-conspirators. Bush should be impeached for this along with a lot of senators.

They certainly have the ear of all levels of government while We The People are ignored.
