Like voters everywhere, we Tennesseans want our politicians to be part professor, part John Wayne. But the top-tier candidates in the GOP field so far -- John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney -- somehow lack that magic merger of smarts and swagger, which is probably why nearly half of Republican voters say they're still waiting for the right candidate. Well, their John Wayne is standing just outside the corral.

What can I say? A decade-long desire to have a chance to vote for this man may finally come to fruition. I am a bit obsessed. :O)

“John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney”
Stacked against that bunch, Fred’s got potential. I’d like to see his choices for cabinet though. It would be unfortunate if he called back tired recycled hasbeens who insist on doing things the same way.

Anyone who thinks the "draft" part of the movement is somehow phony, that Thompson is fueling this all himself, has never met the man, who seems to manage the perfect calibration of laid-back and serious. Most everything else in the article could have come right from FR.

Speaking of acting the part...

Id like to see his choices for cabinet though.
I would, too, though that'd be highly unusual for a candidate. Perhaps even unprecedented, though I'd have to do some research on the subject.
Of course, it's looking like Fred could be a highly unusual candidate, so perhaps anything is possible. I have some ideas of my own on the subject, starting with John Bolton as Secretary of State.

This choice is probably very unpopular. Rick Santorum for Homeland Security. This guy has energy. Or any part in his administration.

I like Santorum for any cabinet position, or VP. He’s one of the good guys.

Shortly after I wrote in 2000 that Thompson bears a striking resemblance to the Klingon "Star Trek" character Worf -- high forehead, wide nose and a hairline that exposes a bald top (Google it) -- a package from the then-unmarried senator arrived in the mail. It was a picture of Worf that Thompson had signed with this message: "In the immortal words of Sawyer Brown, some girls don't like boys like me. Ah, but some girls do." Imagine if a pundit said something similar about Al Gore. Does anyone think that Gore has the guts to make fun of himself like that? No way.

"candidates in the GOP field...somehow lack that magic merger of smarts and swagger"Its funny how libs can never understand that it is position on issues that matters, not smarts and swagger.

Like voters everywhere, we Tennesseans want our politicians to be part professor, part John Wayne. And they gave us one part Professor Irwin Cory and part Pee We Herman.

it is position on issues that matters It's not just the position: it's the ability to articulate the position, with conviction.
Republicans ain't had none of that there articulation in quite a spell.

Does anyone think that Gore has the guts to make fun of himself like that? Gore has tried to make fun of himself, but every single time, he comes off as a complete doofus.
