* BHP plan for $975m California LNG terminal turned down * Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said proposal not good enough * Conservationists and celebrity residents pleased

CALIFORNIA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has turned down a plan by BHP Billiton to build a huge floating gas terminal off the coast, a proposal vocally opposed by locals.

The Australian energy company's proposal for the $US800 million ($975 million) liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal off the southern California coast previously was rejected by the State Lands Commission and the California Coastal Commission...

"Liquefied natural gas can and must be an important addition to California's energy portfolio," he said.

"However, any LNG import facility must meet the strict environmental standards California demands to continue to improve our air quality, protect our coast and preserve our marine environment. The Cabrillo Port LNG project, as designed, fails to meet that test."

The terminal was to be built about 23km off Malibu. Residents, including a number of celebrities, said it would be an eyesore and pollute the air.

The plan involved bringing chilled gas overseas to be heated and then piped ashore. From there, Southern California Gas Co would deliver it to consumers...

Conservationists praised the decision.

"For the many communities facing these types of projects being foisted onto them, it's a very, very tough battle," said Susan Jordan, who heads the California Coastal Protection Network.

Hmmm... they can get their LNG from Venezuela/the Middle East if they like. After all, Californian Democrats don’t want to trade with their enemies.

I don’t really disagree with this. No sense in spending money on infrastructure in the future Northern Mexico. Let them do it after it’s annexed.
