Bush Removes Provision Requiring Back taxes From Illegal Immigrants
Boston Globe ^ | May 19, 2007 | Michael Kranish

The Bush administration insisted on a little-noticed change in the bipartisan Senate immigration bill that would enable 12 million undocumented residents to avoid paying back taxes or associated fines to the Internal Revenue Service, officials said.

An independent analyst estimated the decision could cost the IRS tens of billions of dollars.

A provision requiring payment of back taxes had been in the initial version of a bill proposed by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat. But the administration called for the provision to be removed due to concern that it would be too difficult to figure out which illegal immigrants owed back taxes...

"It is important that the reformed immigration system is workable and cost efficient," Stanzel said. "Determining the past tax liability would have been very difficult and costly and extremely time consuming."...

Laura Capps, a spokeswoman for Kennedy, said a provision for requiring back taxes was in Kennedy's original bill and that Chertoff called for it to be removed. "Chertoff thought it would be too challenging to accurately determine the amount of an applicant's back taxes," she said.

Administration officials said many illegal immigrants do not get paychecks that can be audited, making it difficult to determine tax liability.

"An independent analyst estimated the decision could cost the IRS tens of billions of dollars."

The analysts are wrong. It's not going to cost the IRS one red cent... It's going to cost the TAXPAYERS tens of billions of dollars!

Good catch Mark. The wordsmithing and hidden slants lure the untrained mind into thinking that their hard earned money is not actually theirs, but the IRS's. What you said is the true fact they don't want to print. You see it, I see it, and some others see it, but too many don't. So they get away with this slip of the hand again and again, to the detriment of our nation and honest, hard-working people.

Oh great! He wants to forgive the $$ for illegals, BUT he wants military vets to pay three times more for their tricare (healthcare)

Winston Churchill once said to his wife, "Clemmie, take this pudding away. It has no theme."

This is the epitaph of the Bush Administration. Like Seinfeld, it's about nothing.

One thing after another, all poorly executed BECAUSE all unconnected to any larger idea or principle.

Like Daddy, no use for the "vision thing".

Shame.

It took this long for you? I have to admit, I stopped believing in this President long ago

Well, it's obvious the republicans and this President care nothing about what the electorate of their own party are saying. We just had an election where some misguided "conservative" voters handed control of congress over to the DBM/dems to send a message and it seems as if republicans and this Prez. are running as far away from that message as they can.

I just didn't realize Bush was so "moderate," and devoid of understanding the intent of the action.

If this is true, it's beyond discouraging....

TOO DIFFICULT to:
FIND the illegal intruders.

INSIST they learn ENGLISH.

FIGURE out the TAXES they owe the country and the taxpayers.

FORCE them to pay for the medical assistance they recieve.

FORCE them to pay for the costs they raise in the schools.

FORCE them to pay for the justice system costs.

Seems NEVER too difficult to impose all these problems on the citizens and taxpayers who belong in the USA.

WHAT is wrong with this picture?????????
