‘Call that dog whisperer guy.’ The whisperers are small in number, tho — the Grizzly Guy’s gone, I bet the Pit Bull Whisperer will follow shortly.

What IDIOCY.

Pit Bulls are sweet, affectionate, friendly beasts.

Who just happen to cause one third of the nation's dog-bite fatalities.

Pit bulls and pit-bull crosses (not always easy to distinguish) have caused more than a third of the nation's dog-bite fatalities since 1979 and a comparable proportion of serious injuries. ... New York City, with a million dogs, conforms to these national trends. In 1997, the Department of Health reported 7,075 dog bites in the city and some 1,000 complaints about frightening dogs. Gotham police and other authorities had to round up 892 biting dogs in 1997, 200 more than the year before. Of these, 294—33 percent—were pit bulls or pit-bull mixes, though they make up only an estimated 15 percent of the city's dogs.

Pit bulls are sweet and affectionate right up to the time they kill your running and yelling child. ("Triggers", ya know. The kid should have known better.)

"Darlene Haltrom said: "He's like my daughter's child. A child misbehaves, you don't put him to sleep, you try to help him, and that's what we wanted to do."

There is something wrong with any person who would equate their damn dog to a human.

150,000 (est)
294 dog bites
~0.2% of dogs are biters or 2 out of 1000.
Breed/type problem?

Whoa... hang on. Dogs DO have a sense of right and wrong. I know this for a fact. I own two German Sheperds that are the friendliest dogs around... however, if they think you intend to harm my 22 month old daughter, they will not hesitate to remove your throat from your body. That is their trigger and pretty much the only one they have.

I’ve owned dogs from Terrier mixes, to Labs, to wolf Hybrids. If you understand how the dog thinks and what it is looking for out of you, then there will be no problems. If you are a stupid idiot with no expeience with dogs and you let the dog become alpha in it’s mind, then you will see the exact kinds of attacks that this article describes. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pit bull, a samoyed, german sheperd, poodle or whatever.

Anyone that says it’s the breed of dog is ignorant on the matter.

Mike

There’s a very big difference between a dog that nips people to warn them off, for instance if it is surprised while sleeping, and a dog that really bites somebody.

A dog that bites people needs to be put down. Period.

I used to live in Petaluma. Animal control is pretty much nonexistent.

Thirty three percent of all dog bites of all breeds were pit bulls or pit bull mixes although they constituted only 15% of all dog breeds?

Yep.

Most certainly a type/breed problem.

Most Muslims are not terrorists but, of all religions, most terrorists are Muslims.

Most pit bulls are not killers but, of all the breeds, most canine killers are pit bulls.

I have a mastiff, and the breeder REQUIRED the dog be neutered before 6 months. This is only sensible.

He is very gentle, but when I am expecting visitors who haven’t met him, I put him out in the back yard as they arrive. Then, when he comes in, they are already in the house, he has nothing to try to prevent or defend.

Some visitors want to play with a mastiff. I can’t imagine why, and I don’t allow it. Even at friendly play, a mastiff can cause an injury. I always instruct them to ignore him, let him approach them.

He is well socialized, and well-behaved. He loves children, and will let them do anything with him. His food is always hidden away, and if someone really wants to interact with the dog, I allow them to give him treats. He loves to perform (sit, shake hands, lay down, speak, etc.)

My dog has a job: keep me company, as a widow, and protect me. He didn’t need to be trained to do either one. He is naturally watchful, not aggressive, and not fearful. He is dignified and very kind to smaller animals (my min-pin, my daughter’s bichon—an uncut male, and my son’s golden retriever).

I have never heard him growl, ever. He did not require a lot of discipline, he by nature tried to do whatever I wanted.

But I never take a chance, and I am never careless about him, either. At ~ 190 lbs, that would be foolish.

Here's another clue that the dog would be aggressive:

When Pollium stayed at her home the night before, Haltom said, Dozer had slept with her friend on the couch.

Dogs are so sensitive to status...the dog evidently felt superior to the guest.

“Any medium to large size dog has the capability to “rip your face off”.”

Not the way a pit bull can.

If somebody’s “child” is guilty of repeated unprovoked attacks on a senior citizen I would be quicker to “put them to sleep” than I would for the dog.

That said; this dog is a clear danger. Sorry :-(

“Anyone that says it’s the breed of dog is ignorant on the matter.”

Not quite; it’s ALL about the breed. Dogs are bred and have been bred for specific purposes for many years. Pit Bulls/derivatives were bred for....?

Bull and bear-baiting, and later... dog fighting.

Instinct trumps training. While everyone has the right to have a pit bull that wants one, I still cannot understand why.

I would argue that anyone who says it’s anything but the breed when it comes to pit bulls is ignorant.

Just my $0.02.

Neal
