Shouldn't the $400 SGLI be enough? The $100K in trust ensures that at least something will be left when she turns 18. I don't believe the parents can't raise the girl on $400K. But, if the woman failed to update the SGLI form to designate the parents first, is this really a problem that requires congressional action to fix?

It looks like the slain sailor only gets to pass on $100k. In the event of my death, my parents would receive $250k. I could have bequeathed $400k, but then that’s additional money I would lose each pay period, and I didn’t think it was worth it. My parents would hardly be affected at all, financially, if I were killed. Yes, I might have a family one day, but $250k should be plenty.
