Council backs neighbors in flap, orders flag down

Call it a show of patriotic pride. Or call it a crass red-white-and-blue marketing ploy.

Either way, the city of Las Vegas has ordered a Hummer dealership to take down an American flag that flies 100 feet above the business.

Dan Towbin, owner of Towbin Hummer, said he was in disbelief at the City Council's decision this week to require the business to take down the 30-by-60-foot Stars and Stripes that has flown since May 2006 in front of the dealership.

30 x 60 foot is unusually large. Why couldn’t they display a normal sized flag?

But Tarkanian, after extolling her love of the flag, told Towbin, "You're not doing this for the right reason."

Tarkanian must be psychic.

I have seen the extra large flags at several businesses. Personally, I think they are pretty cool - and seen better on an extra tall flag pole.

I can think of few things more beautiful than a huge US flag flying in the breeze. I don’t care why the guy is doing it. Las Vegas is wrong to make him take it down.

It's an outrage to make anyone take down their American flag. Part of what makes the country great is commerce. In fact, it's a big part of what makes this country great.

There's nothing wrong with a private business flying an American flag, whether to show their patriotism or attract attention or both -- those who have a problem with this need to learn more about this country and what makes it work.

Las Vegas? Not like it would be the first business in town to put up an over-the-top advertizing display.

Nevada. You know, Vegas? Where everything is loud, bright, flashy etc...And they are complaining about a flag?

Yeah, sounds kinda strange, but it all boils down to the guy’s motives, I guess.

A rug store built a few years ago near where I live put up a big flag recently. People complained- not because the flag was too big, but because they were leaving it up at night. Result: the company put in lights!

I wonder if the council would have the cajones to tell them to take down a Mexican flag if they put one up.

Why in the world should they have to? In case you haven't noticed, this is America. Not Mexamerica or Canamerica, or Ameriran. A M E R I C A. I love seeing those huge flags flying in the distance as I approach them. It still awakens comfort in my heart. How much longer will that be possible. Enter the North American Union, out goes our beloved flag and all it stands for. It's not just a piece of red, white and blue material. Everything we once stood for is represented in that flag. It is the single most important symbol we have. We pledge to it our allegiance (The act of binding yourself [intellectually and/or emotionally] to a course of action). Our flag IS our country. We must honor it and vote to change the things that no longer represent those for which it once stood.
