"During the Cold War, two things came to be known and generally recognized in the Middle East concerning the two rival superpowers. If you did anything to annoy the Russians, punishment would be swift and dire. If you said or did anything against the Americans, not only would there be no punishment; there might even be some possibility of reward." Thus wrote the eminent historian Bernard Lewis in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal. According to Mr. Lewis, these different responses evoked very different attitudes toward the two superpowers among Muslims and Arabs, which eventually culminated in the September 11 attacks:

Excellent article. Russia, however,is right on Kosovo. We supported the wrong side.

There is one thing Islamofascists understand and that is a big stick. You can’t make nice with these people because their goal is an Islamic world. That means you either believe or die.

Not necessarily, we should geopolitically oppose anyone that would be an ally for Russian attempts at reasserting dominance.. There are no permanent allies, or enemies.. Just interests... George Washington said that...

For that matter, much of what composes the AQ stance in the WOT, jihad against us “so called infidels” aside, is response to supporting corrupt secular regimes in the region and what they consider stealing their resources. Additionally, before the end of Desert Storm, we tried to collaborate with them to fight Saddam. Its not that we turned on them, we just stopped helping them, and they got slaughtered by the Baathsits, and they sought revenge.

Understand, but I cannot sanction support for Muslims to the detriment of Christians, no matter what.

“America blocks the final realization of this goal and hence is a natural target for aggression. In this sense, the House of Islam’s war for world mastery is a traditional, indeed venerable, quest that is far from over.”

A fact too many in the west ignore or do not understand. That being said the Russians did handle the muzzi’s in Lebanon who had captured some of their diplomats. They grabbed some of the terrorists family and started sending body parts to the terrorists.

The diplomats were released and they never had a problem again. So on the street fight level the Russians are good, but on a region level they are timid. So we are strong on the region level, but we would do well to emulate them on the street level too.

Now if we could handle the dems on the political street level where they are as ruthless as the Russians.

Re: big stick

Have read that much of Arab culture has similarities with Viking and AmerIndian societies, in that the compassion, mercy, and decency of others often gets mis-interpreted as weakness.
