Filmmaker Michael Moore has attacked the Swedish government for opening up the health service to more private sector involvement.
Moore, known for his campaigning left-wing film projects such as Bowling for Columbine, made the comments to Swedish news agency TT Spektra from the Cannes Film Festival.
"I am very sorry to hear that they are selling out public healthcare. Everything that is good about public healthcare has its origins in Scandinavia," he said, adding that he thought the Swedish public would vote the centre -right Alliance government out as a result.
"If you sell out the healthcare system in Sweden, you attack the core of everything that has to do with free healthcare," he continued.
Moore is in Cannes to promote his new film 'SiCKO', which criticizes the American healthcare system, particularly focusing on the plight of people in the United States who do not have private healthcare insurance.
In the film, he praises the health systems in Cuba, Canada, France and Britain. This despite the fact that the Canadian and British systems both have large elements of private involvement while being mainly free for users - something he appeared to criticize the Swedish government for allowing.
Johan Pehrson, a Liberal Party member of the Swedish Parliament's Social Affairs Committee, said Moore's comments "show how little he knows about Swedish healthcare politics."
"Michael Moore is wrong in this. We are not introducing an American system," he said.
Moore's comments refer to the Swedish government's plans to scrap a law banning local authorities from outsourcing the running of major hospitals to the private sector. Sweden's previous Social Democratic government had introduced the ban, also banning companies running smaller hospitals from making profits or treating private patients.
Pehrson told The Local that the latest reforms were likely to reduce the number of people in Sweden reliant on private insurance for healthcare by making the system more effective.
"The point is to ensure that we get value for our tax money. Hospitals are able, when they have treated all their regular patients, to sell any overcapacity to treat patients from abroad, for example," he said.

As usual. Let him pester other countries with his half-truths, misquotes, and outright lies.
“Hmm... so Michael Moore is bashing countries other than the USA? I guess we could call that progress!”
Now, if could only get them to keep him...
While visiting England with my brother-in-law’s family in Humberside, my sister remarked on some of the stately Victorian era houses in the country side that appeared to her to be Inns. Her father-in-law who answers only to Princess Anne told her that they were Private Medical Facilities for the Monied Class. Oh, and by the way, if you are over 55. You can’t get dialysis.
Who cares what MM thinks about the medical field? Is he now some sort of healthcare expert?
Ever wonder how socialize medicine would treat a grossly overweight male? I don’t imagine they would want to throw a lot of money into his health care.
That would imply he was right on something else.
So you have to call him "Princess Anne"? That's just not right.
Beat me to it, you dog, you! ;)
LOL... you think we're hated now? If we sent Moore to Sweden permanently, he'd eat through the country's entire food supply in a week. We, as Americans, are much better people than that!
Why would anyone take health care advice from a 400-pound gourd?
“Free” Healthcare and drugs is going to the Democrats “Big Hammer” in 2008, COUNT ON IT....
Every major nation that has Socialized it’s healthcare is trying to GET AWAY from it, because it simply doesn’t worrk in the long-run, yet WE are heading head-long into it.
Michael Moore has made millions on his propaganda films, but he pays the participants little or nothing. A story here yesterday said that the three people he took down to Cuba for Castro-style healthcare are still ill, and at least one of them is also broke, suggesting that he didn’t get paid for his participation in the film.
Moore is a typical socialist pig, meaning that he swills the gravy and throws the scraps to the proletariat.
I wonder where he goes to get treated when he gets sick? I don’t think Cuba. Socialist healthcare is for the masses, not for the privileged, like Michael Moore.
And the Swedes care what Michael “Lard@$$” Moore thinks, why?
- Correct.
To begin with, health care is NOT free in Sweden, although it’s very affordable.
Furthermore, no one will be denied competent health care and it will not become more expensive due to these reforms in Sweden.
Moore seems to believe Sweden has decided to adopt the American health care model, which is not the case.
Michael Moore views himself as an independent, open-minded critic of Capitalism. In reality, he’s not even open-minded enough to get the basic facts right before protesting against political decisions made in other countries.
Michael Moore will never make a single krona in Sweden. SO dire is his flop, he is left with targeting a country who couldn’t care less if he never existed, and will never acknowledge his existence outside of his torrent health meter on the piratebay.
Long live the Pirate Party!
