Washington — Angry Georgians on Monday continued to inundate the state's U.S. senators with phone calls and e-mails opposing the immigration compromise bill the two Republicans helped craft.
"The phones are still ringing," said Lindsay Mabry, a spokesman for Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
Chambliss, ranking member of the Senate agriculture committee, was primarily involved in negotiating provisions of the bill dealing with migrant farm workers. But the provision that has riled most callers is one that would allow existing illegal immigrants to gain citizenship relatively quickly and without being required to return to their home countries first.
Conservatives have tagged the provision "amnesty" for immigrants who broke the law. Some booed Chambliss at last weekend's state Republican convention when he tried to talk about the compromise, which sets goals for beefed-up border security that must be met before any of the other reforms can take effect.
Sen. Johnny Isakson — who originated the idea of wedding the reforms pushed by liberals with the border security concerns of conservatives — was also getting his share of the blowback.
"The vast majority of the calls we're getting are that it's a bad bill," said Joan Kirchner, spokeswoman for Isakson. "There's a lot of misinformation out there, and it's reflected in the calls."

Thanks, angry Georgians!
This article makes it sound like just Republicans are opposed to the bill. I heard on the radio this morning that opposition to the bill is pretty broad based among both parties.
There's no misinformation out there. And eventhough no one has even read this monstrocity yet we're smart enough to know when DBM/dems and rinos get together it's BAD for every one!
Enforce the current laws, you rino prix!
If they actually think the public is misinformed,,then they need to slow down this legislation to take a long cool reasoned look at the bill it’s contents, impact and costs.
If you really believe them..they will be willing to wait weeks and months for this bill to be digested.
Once digested..I’m sure that oppostion will only grow.
More and more it looks like Conservatives are the RINOs these days instead of the other way around. Face it folks, this is the party now and we Conservatives are now on the outside looking in when it comes to what these clowns think and do.
Another party line talking head.
Also, this line stood out, especially after the Rep. Debate:
“Sen. Johnny Isakson — who originated the idea of wedding the reforms pushed by liberals with the border security concerns of conservatives — was also getting his share of the blowback.”
That is all I’ll say.
Misinformation? How does she know - has anyone up there actually READ the thing?
That’s right Ms. Kirchner ,we are all so “ignorant”
I will start hammering them again this morning.I will never let up on these bastards. We’re talking about the future of our children and grandchildren here.
“So what do you think of ‘your man’ Bush’s amnesty plan”.
I was so embarrassed. Anyway, he is L-I-V-I-D over it. So believe me, it isn't just conservatives. I think it’s safe to say that it’s pretty much all tax-payers.
Chambliss was on Fox and Friends this morning spinning away...
You said it. Keep calling everyone. I am.
Fire off a quick letter and mail it today. Their offices generally pay more attention to something on paper than just a call.
A friend of mine is far, far left and he doesn’t like the immigration bill. What is the base of public support for this bill? Who is out there demanding this bill be passed? I don’t get it.
bump for later
Boos, hisses greet defense of immigration reform bill (Saxby Chambliss booed)-- He will take the reaction a bit differently after the 2008 elections.--These rotten bast*rds are so arrogant that we can't afford to trust them ever again
Having said that, I am not happy with the new immigration deal. Still, neither Georgia Senator is a RINO. Give me a break, when a politician goes against what you believe is he automatically a RINO? NO. Look at their entire record.
I heard Bill Bennett interview Senator Kyl from Arizona, who lead the negotiations for this deal. HIS view was that if the GOP stayed OUT of the immigration negotiations then Ted Kennedy and gang would impose a RAT bill without any positive features. While I do not like the amnesty provisions in the bill, the bill COULD BE WORSE.
I think the ultimate problem is, no matter what the law is, will it be enforced. The current law is flawed, since employers can easily defend legal action against them for hiring illegals. I like the new ID cards. I like the extended period that it will take for illegals to become legal, with fines. I like sending criminals back to their home countries. In the end, the deal may still not be worth it, but lets analyze the problem and tell our Senators what we don’t like, and if they have the power, perhaps they can amend the bill. It may be that we have to choose between a poor deal and keeping the same system that doesn’t work. Neither choice is that good.
I love the claims of voter misinformation especially when my Senators supported this legislative pig before it was actually written. If that’s not elitist Chutzpah then I do not know what is.
Just goes to show the actual disdain our “Leaders” and their staffs hold for the poor, ignorant slobs who pay their salaries, benefits and retirement plans.
“There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and it’s reflected in the calls.”
In other words, they are calling us stupid.
Okay. We are stupid. We are so stupid we will stupidly vote for any candidate who runs against you…no matter the party. Therefore, you traitorous crooks had better start finding yourselves real jobs because we are too stupid to realize how smart and pro-American you are.
Pendejos.
