Multilaterals: If there's one lesson to be learned from the exit of World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, it's that the World Bank needs reform even more than do its Third World customers.
Wolfowitz focused much attention on the World Bank's clients, talking up poverty eradication, corruption-control and forging ties with more reform-minded leaders on the African and Asian continents. These things all sound nice in the press but they have little to do with banking.
In that, Wolfowitz was remarkably short on reforming how the Bank itself works. As he leaves, it remains a bloated, entrenched bureaucracy defending its privileges in full mission-creep instead of becoming a vital institution.
This is important because the bank faces growing challenges from the private sector. If the World Bank can't compete, it needs a leader who will not only recognize that problem, but have the fortitude to do the one thing that would be required: disband the World Bank altogether.

I don’t think it can be reformed by one person. I hope Bret Stephens and toehrs keep exposing the WB’s inner workngs . Few people know or understand this institution or what it is doing. LEAK LEAK LEAK everything about the internal sorruption.
Hey I know - let's replace it with the federal reserve system.
I hope he does, too. He’s got a deep well in front of him, god know what kinds of creatures he will catch. All I am sure of is that will be antediluvian, cold, wet and slimey.
Wolf’s problem was that he was too nice to them.
Yep. A housecleaning is necessary. The fiefdoms have grown entrenched.
Yep. A housecleaning is necessary. The fiefdoms have grown entrenched.
Do you notice that Wolf freely admits his errors, but not one staffer ever has? They still think they are the wounded ones and that their fiefdoms are not a public trust but their personal property? That’s the difference. I just wish he hadn’t tried to appease them.
Leftists hold themselves to much different standards than they hold others, especially their enemies. For instance, any Republican who had $90k in his freezer and used a ANG helo to get it during a flood would have been eaten alive by the media and the left. A homosexual Republican cannot have sexual emails with a 18 yr old, but a homosexual Democrat can take his under-aged page to Portugal and have sex with him without fear. Pelosi and her crew can be the most corrupt group in recent history, but Wolf gets creamed. Christians and Jews (leftist's worst enemies) cannot have prayer in school but Muslims (leftist's fondest false victims and false allies) can. "Anti-war" groups can actively betray the US by sending money and support to terrorists without fear of even being investigated, but conservatives were PROFILED by the FBI for quoting the Constitution in the 90s. We cannot use wire taps on phone calls from Islamic terrorists INTO the USA, but the left can use warrantless monitoring of phone calls (Gingrich) and emails (Rep above) to depose Republicans.
The differences are disgusting.
Your last sentence says it all. It is also one of my main problems with President Bush: He appeases and will not go on the attack against the left. "Compromise" to a leftist means their opponent gives in and the leftists stays firm. No wonder the left loves dictators.
One cannot appease the left just as we cannot appease any fascist/socialist group (leftists, islaomfascists, or the UN). All appeasing says to ones foe is "I am weak, please beat me more even though it is you who deserves a thrashing".
It’s time for the World Bank to go out of business.
There you go...right! No more Jizyah to muslim countries who turn around and ravage their own people. If individuals and their orgs want to contribute and help out fine...but not these phoney baloney internationalist socialist frankensteins.
We are already paying through the nose for their oil.
