Just 26% Favor Senate Immigration Plan

Initial public reaction to the immigration proposal being debated in the Senate is decidedly negative.

A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey conducted Monday and Tuesday night shows that just 26% of American voters favor passage of the legislation. Forty-eight percent (48%) are opposed while 26% are not sure. The bi-partisan agreement among influential Senators and the White House has been met with bi-partisan opposition among the public. The measure is opposed by 47% of Republicans, 51% of Democrats, and 46% of those not affiliated with either major party.

The enforcement side of the debate is clearly where the public passion lies on the issue. Seventy-two percent (72%) of voters say it is Very Important for “the government to improve its enforcement of the borders and reduce illegal immigration.” That view is held by 89% of Republicans, 65% of Democrats, and 63% of unaffiliated voters.

Advocates of “comprehensive” reform have taken to arguing that those who want an enforcement-only policy must explain how they would deal with the 12 million illegal aliens already living in the country. The public reaction to that question appears to be “Why?” Only 29% of voters say it is Very Important for “the government to legalize the status of illegal aliens already in the United States.”

Thirty-eight percent (38%) of Democrats believe that legalization is Very Important. Just 22% of Republicans and 27% of unaffiliated voters share that view.

We have been fighting the amnesty proposal as if the future of our country depends on our efforts... because it does. As working, voting, law-abiding, thinking Americans, we can only come to one conclusion: that those who support the Senate bill have chosen to intentionally ignore the will of the people, and have put their own political ambitions ahead of what is good for the United States of America. This agenda is unacceptable, and we have rejected it utterly. Moreover, it constitutes a direct threat to the future of this republic, because it indicates that there are members of the body politic who no longer answer to the will of the people, the Constitution, or even to rational thought itself.


Keep the pressure on, because the Senate is hoping this will all just go away if they wait long enough. Write, call, email, and fax your representatives... and DO NOT STOP. If you are unable to reach your Congressional or Senate rep, try the office of El Presidente. Contact your local and state party representatives, and the Republican and Democrat National Committees. Keep building the tidal wave that we need to KILL THIS BILL!

What this poll really shows is just out of touch these congress critters are with their constituents.

If after so much blow back the the people then congress proceeds to push this travesty off on the USA then these senators are an example of the height of arrogance.

Advocates of “comprehensive” reform have taken to arguing that those who want an enforcement-only policy must explain how they would deal with the 12 million illegal aliens already living in the country.

That's a diversionary question like I would expect to hear out of a child with a dirty bedroom. How about they explain why they let it get so bad and why don't they explain why they continue to leave our borders protected?

I just faxed that entire report to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison since she is still unsure how she will vote.

I’ve also sent emails and called the local Austin office. Her DC office line has been nothing but a busy signal for the past few days. I bet she is getting an earful from upset Texans.

And not only do the majority dislike the immigration bill, they also favor 1) securing the borders with ironclad efficiency, 2) severely penalizing any business/homeowner who utilizes illegal labor, 3) abolishing the "anchor baby" debacle, 4) deporting all illegals.

Merely rejecting the immigration bill is NOT enough. We've absolutely got to get rid of all illegals.

If this poll is accurate and that is a big if, then it means more Democrats understand treason than Republicans do!Say it ain't so. One could construe that to mean the Dem leadership is more out of touch with their voters than Jorge Bush is with his. If the poll is right, it is a wake up call for Pubbies.

This is a very telling report done by Zogby a couple years ago.

Americans and Mexicans have widely divergent views of border issues, according to a new poll by Zogby International.

Zogby found that a large majority of the Mexican population believes the southwest territory of the U.S. rightfully belongs to Mexico, and that Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without first obtaining U.S. permission. By contrast, Zogby’s survey of Americans conducted within a few days of the Mexican poll shows a large majority supports reducing immigration levels and wants the military deployed along the border to protect the U.S. from illegal immigration.

Zogby’s poll found that 58 percent of Mexicans agree with the statement, “the territory of the United States’ Southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico.” Only 28 percent disagree, and 14 percent are unsure.

A similar majority, 57 percent, agree with the statement, “Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without U.S. permission,” while 35 percent disagree. Seven percent are unsure.

The survey has a margin of error of 3.5 percent. The Mexico portion of the survey was conducted in Spanish between May 25 and May 26 among 801 adults chosen at random throughout Mexico. The poll was commissioned by Americans for Immigration Control, Inc. (AIC), which advocates increased restrictions on immigration.

Zogby’s survey of American attitudes found wide majorities of Americans also oppose amnesty for illegal aliens. The U.S. portion of the survey was conducted of 1,015 likely voters in the U.S. from May 28 to May 30. It found that 65 percent disagree with the statement, “foreigners residing illegally in the U.S. should be given amnesty.” Just 26 percent of likely voters support amnesty for illegals, while 9 percent are unsure.

A large majority, 58 percent, agree that the U.S. should “admit fewer immigrants each year.” Only 6 percent want “more immigrants each year,” and 30 percent want to “keep immigration at the current annual levels.”

The single largest majority in the entire poll was found among Americans supporting use of the military to guard the border. Fully 68 percent of those surveyed agree with the statement, “the U.S. should deploy military troops on the border as a temporary measure to help the U.S. Border Patrol curb illegal immigration.” Only 28 percent disagree, and 3 percent are unsure.

Every time I look at that picture my first reaction is to wonder who farted. Then, I rethink that and take into consideration who is in the photo and realize they must be talking their constituents. They have to believe we’re a big joke to foist that lump of steaming feculence that is the immigration reform bill upon us.

26% of RESPONDENTS to the phone calls supported the bill.

That may represent a large precentage of illegal invaders.
How can you verify citizenship over a telephone?

If the administration is admitting to 12 million, there may be a lot more than that here.

Yes! The argument “We can’t deport 12 million, it’s impossible” is a straw-man and a canard. We don’t need to deport every single one of them. Seal the border so no more can get in. Then start deporting. Round up the felons, drug addicts, gang members, nut-jobs, and bums first. Then anybody who doesn’t speak English, followed by those with ties to La Raza and other radical organizations. I’m not all that concerned about the rest, and if we shut down the companies that employ them, they’ll leave of their own accord anyway.

Like I’ve said before, they don’t live with the rest of us. They don’t shop at Target or Walmart, they don’t take family trips on our highways, they have drivers and live behind closed walls. They don’t hear Spanish being spoken in all stores or see reckless Mexican drivers. They are not one of us, therefore they have no idea.

You are very correct. If you walked along Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens, you would be frightened. I have read that from 25% to 40% of the convicted felons in federal prisons are illegal aliens. Maybe we can’t control our own criminals, but we had damned better do something about the foreign ones! There is already a backlash: I know so many kids who have opted not to study Spanish in high school as a protest.
