Actor, former senator is state GOP headliner

STAMFORD, Conn. --Hundreds of state Republicans turned out Thursday for the party's annual fundraising dinner to listen for signs that the pool of presidential hopefuls may have another contender.

Former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson was the keynote speaker and the approximate 600 guests paid between $250 to $1,000 for a chance to meet the Tennessee Republican.

Some conservatives, a sizable part of the GOP base, eagerly hope Thompson will make a bid for the party's presidential nomination.

Many backers say Thompson, who is well known for his role as prosecutor Arthur Branch in NBC's long-running drama "Law and Order," is the sole conservative candidate in the mold of Ronald Reagan, another ex-actor when he ran for president.

Wonder if any Connecticut freepers got to go to the event. Great that Fred is getting more and more attention! Now I am waiting for him to announce and pick Duncan Hunter as his running mate!

the sole conservative candidate in the mold of Ronald Reagan

Ideologically, this is a stretch. He's probably at least as conservative as GWB, though, and definitely at least as conservative as the so-called frontrunners (Romney, Guliani, McLame).

I'm pretty sure what ppl like about Fred is that a) he can string sentences together on his own (unlike GWB), he's not a preening nancy boy (like Romney). He almost seems, dare I say it, genuine.

Bottom line: He seems to have the skills/traits to persuade people, something GWB lacks almost entirely. It's been tough having GWB as our spokesman. Be nice to have a spokesman who can speak, but who isn't yer typical forked tongue career politico.

Fred is FAR more conservative than Bush fiscally and constitutionally.

Pick any Rino and they will be as conservative as Bush. Fred has Bush beat all to hell on conservative issues.

The kind of guy that is needed (and trusted) by the “silent america” to do what is takes to take the country back to some semblance of sanity.

So now Romney is a “preening Nancy boy”

Mitt Romney is a solid conservative, pro-family, fiscally responsible, tough on immigration candidate who has shown excellent executive leadership.

Fred Thomson is an old, jowelly, Southerner who has yet to prove to me why he should deserve consideration as a world leader.

Who was pro-Roe in 1994. Who supports AW bans. Who signed Romneycare into law while downplaying the cost by a signficant degree. Yeah, a solid conservative. Converted on the road to Des Moines.

Other than the fact that he can unify the GOP, I have no idea why anyone would support the dude.

However, he lags the declared candidates in fund raising by multimillion's and trails in building campaign organizations and courting grassroots supporters in Iowa, New Hampshire and other early primary voting states.

Check ready, where do I send it to...?

Thompson centered his message around traditional Republican policies of a strong national defense and a limited government.

"My friends, that's the party that I joined and I bet you that's the party you joined. I'm sure that's the party our country needs tonight," Thompson said. "We need to make sure that's still our party..."

He said he was inspired at the age of 21 by Sen. Barry Goldwater's book, "Conscience of a Conservative."

"We must push back and push back hard," he said. "Remember how we won in the 1980 we stuck to our conservative principals (sic)."

"Our choice is not whether or not we will fight our choice is where we will fight," Thompson said. "And the only debate going on with regard to this most important issue facing our country on the Democratic side of the aisle is the date of our surrender."

Thompson has the strongest record on the Constitution of any federal candidate I’ve seen in recent years. He devoted his Senate career to leading the charge to rein in federal government, return Constitutional powers to the states, stop the unelected, unaccountable federal bureaucracy from making laws, and in general make government more transparent and accountable. He was the sole dissenting Senate vote on several pieces of “feel-good,” nanny-state federal legislation, including the national .08 DUI limit and the gun-free school zone bill.

AND, he has a long record of dealing with national defense issues.
