Resisters among us

OK, admit it. You've probably resisted. Yes you did, you naughty little resister. Because earlier this month was Marxism 2007: A Festival of Resistance in Toronto. And we were all as excited as a leftist poet with a government grant.

The website for the jamboree was not supposed to be funny but was unintentional satire at its finest. Under "Highlights" the organizers have given us, "Imperialism and the new Middle East," "Building Unity: Muslims and the Left" and "Denier, Liars, and the Politics of Climate Change." Which leads one to wonder, what constitutes lowlights in the frenzied minds of our soppy revolutionaries?

The website also had a list of the festival's "Cultural Events." Sadly this space was empty. But we were tantalizingly informed that we should, "Watch this space for updates." Still watching.

The speakers were a delight. One was, "an urban, mixed race indigenous writer, activist and community worker," one, "editor of the six-volume series, The Communist International in Lenin's Time" and another, "a theatre director, playwright and producer" involved with, "a woman-positive theatre company."

Tough to resist, as it were. Goodness, you just couldn't make it up.

But just when you thought it might all be a little boring, along came my old buddy Mohammed El Masry. You know the chap. He became infamous when, on my television show three years ago, he repeatedly said that all Israelis over age 18, whether nurses or doctors or pacifists or whatever, were legitimate targets for Palestinian suicide bombers.

He's not alone in his extremism. One prominent speaker boasted of having been a member of the Communist Party from 1930-68, during which time, of course, Stalin murdered far more people than Hitler ever managed to exterminate. Communist concentration camps were more numerous and lasted far longer than any involved in The Holocaust.

Brave journalists revealed this in the 1930s, but were libeled and silenced by, well, by members of the Communist Party and their fellow Marxist travellers. Even when many Soviet crimes were officially admitted in 1956 some true believers, it seems, continued in the Party. The same shame should apply to them as to neo-Nazis.

Generally it was the usual and achingly tired list of pro-Palestinian, pro-abortion, pro-gay, pro-green, anti-Israel, anti-U.S.A., anti-mommy-and- daddy-because-they-weren't-very-nice-to-me-when-I-was-little nonsense that we always see.

There were, however, two serious aspects to all this. One was the number of speakers who were full-time professors in our universities and colleges. In other words, they are paid by your tax dollars to teach your children.

The other was the staggering number of workshops and speakers devoted to the appallingly perverse relationship between Marxism and radical Islam. Western revolutionaries believe that this is the route to power. Radical Islamists are laughing all the way to the arms dump. They're using these useful idiots and will turn on them just as Muslim radicals have turned on the secular left throughout Asia and the Middle East.

It is such a colossal lie. In any Islamic republic, the homosexual delegates would be tortured and murdered, the feminists arrested, the atheists persecuted and the union activists beaten up. If you doubt it, study Iran or any Arab state.

Oh well. I resist therefore I am. Silly, privileged, unworldly but, oh, so much fun.

“If you doubt it, study Iran or any Arab state.”

Oh, but that would require a brain.
