Judge strikes down Granite City sign ordinance

A federal judge has struck down an ordinance limiting the size of signs protesters are allowed to display during parades.

U.S. District Judge William D. Stiehl reaffirmed a previous decision that a city ordinance banning signs larger than 8½-by-11 inches - or a letter-sized piece of paper - within 25 feet of a parade in Granite City was "not narrowly tailored and amounted to a heckler's veto."

The ruling is in response to a lawsuit filed last year by anti-abortion activists who for years have displayed large images of aborted fetuses near a Granite City abortion clinic and at parades.
